44-year-old Italian leaps 6-8 1/4 in open meet

As we await Sunday’s high jump showdown between M45 Dennis Lewis and Bruce McBarnette at Charlotte nationals, I’m reminded that the United States doesn’t have a monopoly on elite masters grasshoppers. Across the pond, M40 world champion Marco Segatel of Italy cleared 2.04 (6-8 1/4) at age 44 in this open meet on July 29, […]

Who owns USATF masters meet results?

Of course, nobody “owns” meet results. But what if someone wanted to create an archive of old meet results — say, of all the USATF masters nationals — and the only way they could do it for pre-Internet years was by photocopying the results pages of National Masters News and making PDF files? Would NMN […]

Day 7 at Eurovets: No-shows grow in heat, long meet

The heat apparently has taken its toll on the Eurovets meet in Poland. By Day 7 — July 27 — many folks were no-shows at check-in. This isn’t unusual. At USATF masters nationals, it’s common for people to sign up for more events than they intend to contest. (Injuries and exhaustion also play a role.) […]

Henry Rono’s comeback proceeds apace. And it’s being detailed in public on the letsrun.com message board, with Henry piping in occasionally. A W45 British thrower was close to the collapse and described it as “thunder in the air.” […]

Marathon man Whitlock morphs into WR miler

Canada’s Ed Whitlock, famed for his post-70 sub-3-hour marathons, tried a relative sprint tonight in Windsor, Ontario (across the river from Detroit), clocking an amazing 5:41.80 at age 75. That shatters the listed M75 world record of 5:57.2 by American Scotty Carter in 1992. On the Age-Graded Tables, Ed’s time corresponds to an open mark […]

The latest discovery is M45 distancer John Tuttle, entered in the 5K and 10K. He was on the 1984 team for the marathon (he took 105th. Bad day). The others are Ed Burke, Bud Held, Patricia […]

More details on Beccalli’s quest for Brazil worlds

Can a country host a world masters meet without bidding for it? That’s the case here, I guess. WMA President Cesare Beccalli of Italy and Brazil is reported to be making a strong case for Brazil to host the 2011 outdoor championships — even though a bid hasn’t been made by that country. “It’s only […]
