Gault turns 10.84 and 22.12 at Oxy; Ottey turns the big Five-Oh

Merlene Ottey

Bulletproof-consistent Willie Gault, 49, posted times of 10.84 and 22.12 for the 1 and 2 over the weekend at a meet in Los Angeles. See results from the Occidental Invitational. These are improvements over his Steve Scott Invite marks of 10.90 and 22.16 and his 10.86 at Mt. SAC nearly a month ago. Time for an unreality check. His marks would lead the USATF M30, M35 and M40 masters rankings — if he were listed. My advice to Willie: Don’t be shy, guy! Meanwhile, we note a sprint icon’s birthday today. Merlene Ottey is 50! If she steps on the track this season, the WRs of 12.50 (Phil Raschker) and 25.65 (Marie Lande Mathieu) are toast. So far, no sign of M.O. I’ve written Merlene via Facebook and Twitter. Stay tuned.

Good for Willie. Is he signed up for the Nationals?
If he does, I believe Lonnie Hooker will give him all that he can handle.

    The Koops website reports:

Merlene Ottey is celebrating her 50th Birthday and not yet thinking about quitting. . . . Not many would be surprised if the 50-year-old would show up at the European Championships 2010 in Barcelona again. Currently she was staying in the U.S., where she began her career goes, but on 11 May in Ljubljana back.
