Pasadena results: M75 Whilden threatened Payton Jordan AR

Terry Hearst of Royal Results graciously sent me results from Saturday’s California Senior Games at Caltech. See them here. They confirm Christel Donley’s W75 American record in the shot. She threw 7.57 meters (24-10) and broke the listed record by more than 2 inches. Among other noteworthy marks: M75 Bobby Whilden‘s 100 of 13.83 (with legal wind) — just off Payton Jordan’s 13.72 American record, and M80 Don Cheek’s triple of 100 (16.10w), 200 (34.63) and 400 (1:20.58). Also: Nolan Shaheed’s solo 800 in 2:15.99; M55 Greg Stines’ shot put of 15.44 (50-8); and Willie Banks’ jump trifecta (high 1.80/5-10 3/4, long 5.66/18-7 and triple (mark missing from results. I’ll try to get them.)

M60 Nolan Shaheed, looking younger with longer hair and no goatee, ran the 800 in an unchallenged 2:16. (Photo by Chris Stone)

Amazing job by Bobby Whilden. That American record (13.72) by the legendary Payton Jordan has stood up for 18 years, but I do believe that Bobby is going to break it later this year. Bobby really has the goods and has apparently made it all the way back from the injury that had him out for a spell.

To Bobby Whilden, if you attempt the record, make sure there is a windgauge!
We knew, we could not provide one (matter of $$) It was noted in our entry information. But still, if you would have broken that record, I would have felt
    pretty badly,
    Good luck!

Congratulations to all but ESPECIALLY my friend Christel. It was wonderful to see Walt Butler who got me interested in the Masters program 30 years ago.

I went to a track meet at Mount Sac the next day and saw the young jumpers clapping their hands above their heads trying to get the crowd involved and couldn’t help thinking that I had just seen the CREATOR of that jester (Willie Banks).

It looks as if Ken Stones knee is back to 100%

The best thing about the meet was that there was unlimited FREE bottled water for all athletes and it was a very hot day. I wish they will do that in Sacramento. There are no drinking fountains in the Sacramento stadium “cause they want you to BUY drinks and the 3 times I’ve been there in July it was around 101 everyday.

New set of results now include javelin and triple jump, which show a 12.10 (39-8 1/2) for Willie Banks. I assure you it wasn’t a full effort. He’s just testing himself.

A note I got on the 800 racewalk:

Here is the story on the “missing” 800m race walk at the California Senior Games on June 5, 2010

Because this is an unjudged race walk, performances are pretty meaningless.

The purpose of this special event is to allow Senior Olympic athletes who cannot straighten their leg properly (as per USATF Rule 232) a chance to participate.

As a result, we do not publish times and do not give medals based on them or placings in the event. We do, however, give out “finishers” medals for all who complete the two-lap race.

In the past, we did take times to help us sort out the order of placings at the finish and others posted those times all over the internet.

The finishers on Saturday were: Pete Antoine 57, Francisco Rodriguez 57, Jayme Cascegno 51, Ed Neilson 64, Rosario Stanley 64, Ed Stanley 68, and Robert Gordon 80.

Are there any videos? They would be fun to see (and inspirational)!!!

To put Bobby Whilden’s (age 75) feat in perspective, the average major leaguer runs to first base in 4.3 seconds. That’s 90 feet, or 30 yards. In his 100 meter dash, Bobby averaged 30 yards in 3.8 seconds!!!
