Darren claims April 1 birthday. Too much irony for me
Sub-4-at-40 aspirant Darren Worlock has replied to a set of questions I sent him via his Web site. He starts out by answering my DOB query: “My date of birth is 1st April 1970.” OK, April Fools Day. No problem! Lotsa people were born on that day. But then he proceeds to dance around questions about his PRs. He writes: “I can’t really answer your question of my all-time bests. All I can say is I have ran a lot faster in training than my race times show. I did a mile time trial at Whitchurch track in Bristol last summer with next to (no) real training behind me and ran 4:20. That’s the best track time I have ever had. In the past, I have had terrible trouble handling pressure on the track. Put me in a road race and I fly!! That is one of the many, many things I have to sort this time around. I know this goal is big, but people don’t know how hard this is for me, times what everyone else thinks x10.”
Darren continues:
“I will not compete this season as I really want to get a good grounding, getting back in the sport again and training hard for a year. I am only 36 at the moment and have no real intention of competing in anything other than the mile I am training for. Everything else will be a time trial or training run no matter where I compete or what I compete in until 2009. That’s when I want people to stand up and watch me run. I am very aware of overtraining and do not want that to happen again as it did when I was young. I hope this helps somehow and hope to hear from you again.”
Here’s my idea: Get Darren and Marren to race.
Hey, the names are SO similar . . . could they be the same guy?

Ken…did you find yourself with a lots of time on your hands recently?? I can suggest a few good books if thats the case. Why waste OUR time on this crap??
Ken,
Darren & Marren should race Ed Whitlock. But then again, I should not insult a true warrior by suggesting inferior competition.
I think this is a hoax and doesn’t deserve any further coverage.
I ran a marathon time trial in 2:25 once.
My actual RACES are slower, okay a lot slower, but I think I’ll go for the Olympics. Can I just submit my “time trial”??
WAAA HA HA. Thanks for the laughs.
Reminds me of a guy in the 1960s who used to inform the press that he was about to set a world record. He invited them along to Tooting Bec, a then municipal cinder track in south West London (UK), giving them the time he would start his effort. When they arrived at the appointed time, he said, “Sorry fellows, you’re too late, I’ve just set a world record.” And off they went to report it.
Shades of Jonathan Gill, the inmate who was going to run the 1500 in the Olympics…..NOT!
I saw on his web site that he ran a 3 mile time trial in 16 minutes. I can do that, so maybe I should set my sights on a 4 minute mile.
