10.50 for M40 Simpson reported at Texas all-comers

All-comers meets get a bad rap. “They’re for kids. Not well-officiated. Don’t have accurate timing or measuring.” You’ve heard ’em all. But for masters, all-comers can be a godsend. And many are conducted at the highest standards of USATF officiating. One hopes that Luke’s Locker Meets in Dallas and Fort Worth are. From Texas sprinter John Simpson comes word of possibly the fastest 100 by an M40 in American history. John writes: “I won the 100 in 10.50 and finished second in the 200m in 22.03 . . . no wind gauge at this meet, but all times were FAT. Lester Mount (USATF Masters T&F secretary) was in charge of the FAT machine.”

John says he ran in the open division with elite preps and collegians, and adds: “There is nothing like the wooooo of the crowd in the 100, and the look on their faces when they find out my age.”
Don’t peak too soon, John. Lotsa meets left.
FYI: 10.50 at age 40 is equivalent to an open time of 10.02 in the Age-Graded Tables.

Congrats Simp. You now wear the yellow jersey (ala tour de france). 10.50 is fast for any conditions. I was on the fence about Orono, but maybe we need to meet up. 10.50 is enough to get me on a plane.
    Take care.

Aaron, you have been more consistent over the years and you are the one everyone is shooting for..and you know someone can pop up at nationals out of the blue and surprise us all…I was not considering Orono this summer but the weight has shedded and it makes a world of difference as far as start, turnover and endurance…Like I told you at Penn when I ran a horrible but life changing 11.71, I have to lose some weight to stay healthy and I have taken some of your training tips to heart and I appreciate it tremendously…not all top sprinters share insights on training, you are one of the classy men on the sport and makes me proud to be a fellow Master competitor in that class…Hope to see you in Orono! We’ll cross paths again soon…BTW, Southwest Sprinters sure could use you on a leg of that soon to be WR 4×100 relay…Simp

Congrats. S-Train! Obviously the song playin’ in your head rocks HARDER. Keep doin’ what you’re doin’. I’m going to try to get to that magical under-11 this year, if I can find that crease in the time/space continuum you’ve crossed. Rock-n-roll!

Simpson, Son I am so happy for you. Congrats man. Listen, you, Thigpen and Kettrel are class acts. I have to aggree with Simpson other than Bill Collins, Sims who I personally know. Thigpen was the first person to embrace me and give me some training tips. I think you guys bring all fresh energy to the sport. John let me tell you there is nothing more that I would enjoy other for and I to get together again and run the 4×100 just like in high school. Hey I love you and sims, take care Simpson.

Hey Ronnie! Thanks for the kind words..you could have easily brought up some old HS dirt and stories..LOL..How is everything down in the sunshine state? I was thinking about hitting a March meet there next spring at the Disney complex…holler at me via Alan, he has my numbers. Eagle for life baby! BTW, are you going to Thurman’s HOF induction or going to Nationals?..It was a tough decision for me.

    John,
You were a good student, but a great athlete. The eagle spirit is still alive and well. I’ll be in Canton, but wherever you are,”RUN LIKE THE WIND!”

Bill, I was this close to making a roadtrip down to the Puma/Rice All-Comers meet last night in Houston..I want to get that 400 time down to the 51’s or lower..Coach Hart (Baylor) was right..400’s make you stronger at all sprints..it just took 22 years for me to actually believe it 🙂
