Get ’em while they’re hot! National masters multi results

Charlotte nationals were a scorcher last summer. This month, conditions were similar at the USATF national decathlon/heptathlon championships in Alabama. But meet organizer (and world-class multi-man) Bill Murray was ready. Cases of Gatorade, cold-as-ice towels. Athletes were pampered as they persevered amid worse-than-usual tortures. Now USATF Masters multi czar Jeff Watry and Bill Murray have provided complete results. Here are men’s decathlon results and even women’s decathlon results. And here are the heptathlon results, which details Phil Raschker’s mind-boggling world record.

Bill adds details regarding some of the conditions victims:

Sam McClellan M-54 who was our only dehydration/heat victim. He was treated and sent to his car late Sunday to catch a plane. The other injuries were M45 Doug Porter of Seattle, torn Achilles. He will have surgery Friday. His doctor says his prognosis is for 100 percent recovery.
The third injury was M66 Bob Sheedy, Port Angeles, Washington, who had a collision with the HJ standard Saturday. He started the 400M and took about three steps, stopped and loaded into the EMT’s ambulance. He was transported to the hospital where he had six staples in his forehead. He returned Sunday to finish the decathlon and placed second in his division.

Hope Sam, Doug and Bob are making swift recoveries.
Congrats to all — and see you in Orono.

The folks who put on the Alabama meet clearly know how to deal with heat and athletic events – my congratulations to them on a job well done. It just goes to show that when meet directors respect the athletes and put their safety and comfort that good meet can be held despite extreme weather conditions. This did not happen in Charlotte where the $ was more important than having a well run meet and respecting officials and athletes
Lets see how well the good folks in Louisville deal with the heat next week when the older competitors turn up for the National Senior Games and predicted temps in the 90’s! And I sure am hoping for cool temps for Orono in August.
