What’s next? Masters on the cover of National Enquirer?

Another breakthrough for our niche. We made People magazine! Yes, in the same issue that covers Jon and Kate, Zac and Vanessa and Brad Pitt, we see W100 thrower Ruth Frith and M80 vaulter Hiroshi Miyamoto — doing their World Masters Games thing in a double-page photo spread. This season already included Nadine O’Connor featured in USA Today and several masters in Sports Illustrated. But People is as mainstream as it gets. But we won’t be satisfied until Bill Collins is touted by Weekly World News with the screamer “GOLD MEDALIST EXPOSED AS SPACE ALIEN!” and Phil Raschker is on the cover of Star under the banner “Revealed: Usain Bolt is my love child!” My thanks to Michael Kountze for calling my attention to this week’s issue of People (with M35 tennis star Andre Agassi on the cover).

You’re not truly a celeb until you’ve made People magazine. Good onya, Ruthie.

When people magazine gets a hold of a story like Masters, I’m afraid they are going to treat it like a freak show….which we aren’t, right?

Wrong. We probably are freaks. And that does not matter at all. We are helping people to accept diversity.

I’d rather be a 85 year old “freak” than a 40 year old couch potato.

I think our “senior” athletes are inspiring to many, many people.
One of my main reasons for wanting to return to Masters Track next year is so I can be like my elders in 20 or 40 years.
There is nothing freakish about it. You are the truly beautiful people.

What’s next – masters pole dancing? And a blog update

Dave Ortman in Seattle shares this hoot of a story: “Poles might be used for more than just vaulting at the 2012 Olympics in London. A group of supporters has started a petition to get pole dancing into the Olympic Games. It’s not what you might think. Often associated with strip clubs, pole dancing is also an increasingly popular way for women to stay in shape. ‘It’s automatically assumed it has something to do with stripping,’ Lizz Schofield, owner of a Utah dance studio where ‘Pole Fitness’ is in vogue, told KUTV.com, the Web site for a Salt Lake-area CBS affiliate. ‘But this is not stripping at all.’ ” Dave’s nakedly pungent comment: “I can’t wait to see the W90 masters competition.”

Pole dancing is part of the highland games.

Great idea! I am sure glad they got rid of those silly Olympic sports such as baseball and softball so we could possibly accommodate this new sport, which has so much potential interest.
The next Olympics after that should get rid of that stupid, silly marathon and 10,000 meter track race so there will be more room for the pairs pole dancing competition and synchronized team pole dancing competition–can’t wait!
Would anyone be interested in a dance competition involving standard high hurdles? Maybe Masters T&F can add it as a demonstration sport (exhibition only, no medals) in Oshkosh. 🙂
