DAVID PAIN OUTSTANDING SERVICE AWARD: CARROLL DEWEESE
Carroll has inspired all of us. Carroll puts everything he can into his work as our Treasurer keeping MTF going with his intricate, time consuming budget work, his liaison with USATF Indy, his Games Committee work and collection of all the MTF WR’s and AR’s and making sure they are recorded correctly at our outdoor and indoor championships.
He has been elected as our WMA delegate and chairs several committees for WMA and deservedly has their trust with a positive relationship with people around the world. He was instrumental in keeping the competition safe at the WMA Championships in Brazil this October. He was a voice of reason and safety, suspending the meet when the weather conditions became totally unsafe for events to continue on the track. Respecting his authority, the meet management was willing to follow his instructions. Due to his constant vigilance, the National Office has a great deal of respect for all that he does as treasurer. Our relationship with USATF Administrators has never been better. He is dedicated to MTF and has worked hard, despite and through his major illness, to keep the master’s program moving forward. Carroll has been doing everything he can in service to Masters Track and Field not only this year but literally for decades. The Awards committee is honored to present this year’s David Pain Outstanding Service Award to Carroll DeWeese.

Hearty congratulations to Myrle Mensey, Charles Allie, Orville Rogers, Phil Raschker, and Carroll
DeWeese. Personally, I would have liked to see Charles Allie’s name in the headline of this piece, but that is not my call.
Readers may be surprised at this comparison, but I see some commonalities between Charles Allie and someone from a different sport who played decades ago: Elgin Baylor the basketball star.
Near the end of Elgin’s career I saw him at the Spectrum in Philadelphia, and one spectator blurted out the truth: “They can’t stop the old man.” At 24 the 6-5 Baylor averaged 24.9 points per game, and at age 33 he racked up 26.0 points a game (at 27 he had scored 38.3 per game). At 34 and 35 he averaged 24.8 and then 24.0, respectively.
Everyone in basketball knew Elgin, but how many open and collegiate T&F athletes know Charlie Allie? Not many, one would suppose, and why should they? But when you run 24.65 in the 200 at age 65, shouldn’t something be said beyond the arena of masters T&F? After all, they just can’t stop Charles, even though they have been trying to do exactly that for decades.
Good points Pete. Everyone in masters track knows the 24.65 Charles ran is out of this world, but Joe Sixpack sitting on the couch remembers when he ran a hand timed 24 200 in high school and thinks that’s not so special. Ol’ Joe is now about 100 lbs. over his weight from HS and thinks he could go to the track for a week and churn out a 24 again.
Congrats to all athletes of the year.
I was surprised to see Thaddeus Wilson wasn’t on the Men’s 60 age list for 2013 winners. At the indoor National Championship events he received gold in the pentathlon, 60H, and long jump; silver in the 200, and bronze in the 60. At the outdoor National Championship events he received gold in the long jump and 100 hurdles. At the WMA events in Porto Alegre, Brazil he received gold in the 100H and 300H; silver in the long jump, and a bronze in the 100. How are the athletes selected for this winners list?
Oops, my bad! I was thinking of the Shaheed-Maxwell shared award when I was writing the original headline. Fixed now to add Allie.
Congratulations to all our outstanding Athletes who were voted Awards…. They worked hard to get where they are, and it’s nice to see them in the spotlight.
Anyone who has followed Phil Raschker over the 26 years or so knows what an incredibly talented women she has been.. So many Championships ( World and National ) So many amazing performances for National and World Records over that time span.
Way to go Phil, and congratulations on receiving another Award which you so richly deserve.
