Nevada Senior Games: last chance to qualify for 2015 nationals?

Track season is on its last legs, so you’re s—outtaluck if you want to qualify for the 2015 National Senior Games, right? Not so fast. As we learn from the Las Vegas paper, the Nevada Senior Games provide a last-chance meet for next year’s NSG in Minneapolis. The story says: “Nevada is considered an ‘open state,’ meaning residents from other states and countries may participate in the Nevada games to qualify for the U.S. nationals. ….” An organizer says: “Since we’re smaller and later in the year, we do get quite a few out-of-state participants that perhaps didn’t qualify in their state, so they’re trying to qualify through ours.” Nice! Just put up with the heat. Here’s info on the Nevada SG, set for Sept. 22 to Oct. 12.

Martha puts on a great, friendly meet at the UNLV. It’s well run, well attended, and a great way to end the season.

…but you can keep going! California has a 2nd qualifier in November this year.

Louisiana Senior Olympics are also open to out-of-state participants and the track and field is set for Oct. 4 in New Orleans. The weather can still be pretty warm but is not likely to be scorching like in July or August. The entry deadline is Sept. 24 and the entry form can be found at the LSOG website.

There are at least two other meets left in 2014 to qualify for Minneapolis: Huntsman Seniors Games in Utah October 6-18, and the Florida Senior Games in Ft Myers December 6-14. Both welcome out-of-staters.

They allow 45-49 to compete as well. Is this typical of these state or regional qualifiers?

All adults 50 years and better are invited to
    participate.
    a. For adults 45-49, participation is limited to
    Badminton, Racquetball, Table Tennis,
    Track & Field and Walk-A-Thon

The Illinois Senior Games are on Sept 28th. Late registration is the 14th. It might require a phone call at this point. Jennifer Phillips #217-528-4035 ext 130.

Regarding Comment #4, NSG rules provide:

“Athletes must compete in a qualifying event and be 50 years of age on or before December 31, 2014, to be eligible for the 2015 National Senior Games.”

This appears to mean that if you are 49, you may participate in a state games so long as you will turn 50 in 2014 and qualify for the M50-54 at the 2015 NSGs.

Here’s another 2015 qualifying meet. Came over the transom:

Join local and statewide athletes in Sonoma County and the Bay Area November 7-15

What are the Encore Games? The Encore Games are an opportunity to compete against athletes throughout the state and qualify to compete at the National Senior Games in July 2015 in Minneapolis, MN.

What is the difference between the Sonoma Wine Country Games, the State Championship Games, the Encore Games and the National Senior Games?

The Sonoma Wine Country Games are a locally organized senior games event. The state of California offers several local games including: Bay Area Senior Games (Palo Alto), Pasadena Senior Games, San Diego Senior Games, Midland Empire Senior Games, Palm Desert Senior Games and the California Winter Games (Bear Valley). The State Championship Games are hosted by one locally organized game on “even” numbered years. The California State Senior Games Championships were held in Pasadena in June. Each state has its own state championship games.

The National Senior Games are held on “odd” numbered years. The 2015 National Senior Games will be held in Minneapolis, MN in July 2015 and will attract over 10,000 athletes from all 50 states.

The Encore Games is a special opportunity for California athletes to qualify for the National Senior Games. Because of our state’s geographical size and large populace, we petitioned the National Senior Games to allow us to offer a second chance qualifying opportunity. We are excited to qualify more athletes to compete at the national level!

How do I qualify in my sport? Each sport has its own qualifying standards whether it is a timed standard or the top 2-3 finishers per age/gender division. Once you qualify at the Encore Games we send your name to the National Senior Games.

Thank you Dave, but it looks like you can compete ate age 45 as well, but wouldn’t be eligible for the National Senior games. I was just wondering if all the State games allow the participation of the 45-49 group.

The San Francisco-Bay Area Encore Games track&field portion is being held at the College of San mateo Sunday November 9.

Reference #3/Florida Senior Games, Ft. Myers . . . beware.
Especially pole vaulters, find out about last year’s fiasco if you’re planning to wait until December to qualify.

    Correction to #6 (mine) above.

This appears to mean that if you are 49, you may participate in a state SENIOR games so long as you will turn 50 in 2014 and qualify for the M50-54 at the 2015 NSGs.

Do not confuse the various state Senior Games and the National Senior Games (2015 in Minn, MN)for 50+
    http://www.nsga.com/

    with the
National Congress of STATE Games (2015 in Lincoln NE – July 28-August 2.
    http://www.stategames.org/
which includes age groups from 19 on up.
For the 2013 State Games of America results see:

    http://coachoregistration.com/meet/info/pa_stategames/2013/08-02_State_Games_Of_America_National_Championship/

Another case of poor planning with both organizations having their national “games” in odd number years.

Jumpin’ Joe Johnston’s post must refer to the fact that, at last year’s Florida Seniors Games, when it came time to contest the pole vault, they quite belatedly discovered that the trough into which vaulters plunge their pole was quite rusted through, i. e. no pole vault for YOU, you hapless wench (who may have planned for months and traveled from afar, expending hard-earned lucre on airline counters, endured fully-reclined airline seats, etc etc etc, all…for…naught). The blessing in disguise is, 2013 was not a qualifying year, and, the problem has been rectified in 2014 (one would HOPE, anyway).

Segueing slightly, let me recommend our Ft Myer’s accommodations from last year, the Hibiscus House Bed and Breakfast, a short walk from downtown FT Myers (with a raft of attractive eateries) and the winter homes of Edison and Ford.
