Year-old German masters site going strong, touts new slogan

Logo on German site focuses on 30-plus.

Masters logo focuses on 30-plus.

I learned about the two German WRs via a website that’s flown beneath my radar. ue30leichtathletik.de is pretty cool. I learned about the website via Gerhard Wenzke, an M65 high jumper and 2008 European champion. Gerhard writes: “Since some time I am thinking about making track & field over 30 more attractive. There are a lot of things to do. I did one — create a new symbol. A symbol nearly everyone will understand in the world. Symbols can have a powerful force. I had some dicussions over to choose 30 or 35 … but 30 is including everybody while 35 is excluding 5 years of athletes.” He said the biggest masters track site in Germany has adopted his logo, which he calls “an international symbol, an international brand which will be understood worldwide.” The design isn’t dramatic, but I appreciate the effort. Every little logo helps! (And it raises a question: Should masters track start at 30?)

Is the logo the “SIL” inside the circle? What’s it mean?

S = Senior (senior Master); M = Magazin (magazine); L = Leichtathletik (track and field, athletics). The oval = lap.

Honestly, yes I think it should start at 30.. My opinion may be bias because I am in my 30s but under 35. Even though we are allowed to compete at National Championships it stil feel like a seperation to me. For example, the US Master of the year award. Even though it is said that nominations start at 30 on up, in the 30 to 40 age group, the award is has been given to 35 and up even though there were some good under 30s included on the list. I don’t know how selection goes for that award, but if World Masters Champions are given more weight, then that already puts under 35 at a disadvantage..Also, calling us sub-masters also adds to the seperation. I enjoy competing, but, sometimes, I wish it was a little less seperation.
