Clueless sports section leaves out record shot details
So Google sends me a link to some masters news. I click the link, and learn from the Bristol Herald Courier: “Bristol’s Glen Johnson broke the American Masters Track and Field shot put records in his age class at the throwers meet at Clemson University on Feb. 13.”
Oh-kayyyy. And the distance? And the age group? And the old record?
Fuhgeddaboutit. That’s all you get.
But a record is plausible if it’s the same Glen Johnson who was the NAIA champion in 1958.
In 2000, a Glen Johnson was ranked first on my Web site in the M60 shot, tossing 15.95 (52-4). He was the M60 national champion at Eugene in 2003.
If he’s still M60, he apparently broke the listed American indoor 5-kilo record (15.77 or 51-9) of the late Joe Keshmiri back in 1998. If Glen is M65, the record he beat would be Gerald Vaughn’s 14.01 (45-11 3/4) set in 2001.
I searched the Clemson track site for meet results and couldn’t find Glen’s mark. Maybe someone can dig it up.
One would think Glen had the presence of mind to get records form filled out. We’ll see.
