Carla the Magnificent spears an American record
Ever seen a better couple of spearchuckers than Chuck and Carla Greene of Ohio? Chuck reports that his javelin-throwing mate Carla, 42, tossed the spear 42.05 meters (138-0) for a W40 American record, displacing a 2002 mark by Caryl Senn of New York set at Orono, Maine, in 2002. An old-style javelin record for W40 is still listed for Kate (The Great) Schmidt of 43.58 (143-0).
Proud hubbie Chuck writes:
“Carla (age 42) threw the javelin 42.05 meters at the Cedarville University (Ohio) Throwing Classic on September 5th. Pending official ratification, Carla’s throw will become the brand new 40-44 age group American Record. The mark was steel taped; implement was impounded, weighed and measured; all official paperwork & signatures in order – quite a process this is…. On the books right now is Kate the Great’s mark from 1996, made with the old rules javelin & Caryl’s throw from 2002, which is still listed as the pending record with new rules implement.â€
In a P.S., Chuck adds: “Me…myself (age 47)… OK, I took 1st in men’s competition at the Cedarville meet, 58.03 meters (190-5) — still hanging in there.â€
And the moral, of course:
The family that throws together sticks it together.
