Trials winner: A little birdie whispered: 'You can do this'

Donna Lawrence beams after taking masters 200 at Trials.
Video cameras weren't allowed at Hayward Field during the Olympic Trials, lest some aunt of a women's hammer thrower shoot some footage that might show up on YouTube and cause NBC to lose all its money. Pity. We might be able to see W40 Donna Lawrence make up 2 meters in the last 20 and beat a very strong field in the masters exhibition 200-meter race in 25.79. The best we have of this July 5 event is this series of shots. Who is this come-from-behind phenom? All I knew is she was Jamaican-born and ran for a Texas club. So I sent her some questions, and she graciously responded. Here's my quickie Q&A with the bright and lovely Donna, who runs for the Waterloo Track Club and lives in Austin, Texas.
Masterstrack.com: What do you do down in Austin?

Donna: I am a nightshift supervisor at a semiconductor company, Applied Materials. I also referee basketball on the weekends and officiate at USATF track meets.

Tell me about your immediate family. . . . Did they see you run in Eugene?

I went to Eugene alone. I have no family in Texas. My family is scattered throughout NY, MD and LA. My teammates and friends are like family though ... very supportive.

How did you come to move to America from Jamaica?

I grew up in Jamaica with my grandparents till I was 17. I then migrated to the USA after high school to live with my mom. I joined the U.S Air Force shortly after so I could travel a bit.

When did you become a U.S. citizen?

I got my citizenship in 1990. Turns out I was already a citizen since my parents were naturalized and I entered the U.S. before my 18th birthday.

And some mostly Trials-specific questions: You made up a lot of ground in the last 20 meters. How did that happen? Find a new gear?

I can't even remember the first 50 meters. I think I was still too nervous. I came alive after about 70 meters and saw Renee (Henderson) and Charmaine (Roberts) way ahead of me and thought: "Oh my gosh, they're gone. I'm getting whooped." At that point I kicked it (in) gear and began the chase. I was about to settle for third, but this little birdie whispered: "You can do this ... relax and maintain your form and go for it ... oh yeah, and lean at the tape." So I did.

I dropped the shoulders and went for it. You can see the difference in the photos you took. I use that to show the young high school girls at the track what happens when you tighten up and lose your form. You just get stuck in a rut.

Have you ever run before so many people before -- either here or in Jamaica?

No way. Eugenians are just the nicest group of people I have ever met. They cheered for us just like we were one of the elites. They have to be the coolest track and field fans out there. I ran high school track in Jamaica at our girls championships, but can't recall the crowd being quite that big.

What are your all-time bests in the sprints? Did you ever meet or run against Merlene Ottey?

I have no clue what my times were in high school. We did not keep track. In the country, we had the grass track which was barely 200 meters. We ran the 150 barefooted. If we made it through regionals, then we ran the 100 and the 200 in Kingston where there was the one of only three real tracks in the country.

I was in an invitational race with Merlene once. She was so far ahead of us that we really couldn't call it a race. It was her and then the rest of us.

Masters athletes have to overcome injury or other problems at some point. Did you have any challenges this year to meet?

I had so many injuries this year I was ready to quit. No one warned me that hitting the big 40 came with such a physical breakdown. I tore both my groins, my hip flexor and tore both left and right hamstrings. As if that was not enough, in my first race I slipped out of the blocks and twisted my ankle as the gun went off (there were no pins in the blocks). These 40-year-old women are fast, and I knew I had to step up the pace, but I pushed it too hard. Switching to night shift didn't help either. I would show up at the track to meet the fellas at 10 a.m. with coffee in hand instead of water.

After that I learned to pay attention to my body, rest, eat right and drink Lots of water.

How long did you stay in Eugene? Did you see much of the meet from the athletes' section of the stands?

I arrived in Eugene late Thursday night and went straight to the track. The view from our section was just great. It felt like I could reach out and touch the athletes. The stadium is just the right size -- small and quaint.

Did you meet or chat with any of the elite athletes? If so, what did you learn?

No, I didn't get to talk with any of the athletes. I am typically very shy when it comes to initiating conversation. I was in the warm- up area with Alyson Felix and Torri Edwards warming up right next to me. Just behind me was Tyson Gay and Shawn Crawford. I wanted to speak, but couldn't.

Were masters entrants treated well at the Trials? Any difference in how officials handled you vs. the elite open athletes?

We were treated very well -- as equals by the officials and the volunteers. They were very polite and prompt. Loved it! The only difference was of course the lack of coverage. I would have loved to see the race. Thank YOU for being there and capturing the moment for us. Oh yeah, and they handed us our medals in the back - cooldown area.

What was the best part of your Eugene experience, aside from winning the 200?

The best part was achieving my PR. I have been trying to get under 26 seconds, but hate the workout required to achieve it. I made the decision to do the work required to make it happen. Seeing athletes like Renee and Charmaine in action at other meets was an inspiration to me.

Apart from that I enjoyed being in an environment where so many people just love and appreciate track and field. I enjoyed signing autographs for kids and adults. I even got recognized at the airport!

Will you compete at Spokane nationals next month? If so, what events? Jumps, too?

I decided at the last minute to go to Spokane. It was not part of my plans for this year. I just got talked into it. I plan to compete in the 100, 200 and attempt the triple jump.

How have people at home, including friends and co-workers, reacted to your Trials victory?

My teammates were very excited and happy for me. The word got around rather quickly (I didn't tell a lot of people that I was going.) Once the word got out, people wanted to know if this meant I was going to Beijing. I wish! The high school kids at the track were impressed and now motivated to work hard and excel at their own . . . Junior Olympics.

Anything else you'd like to mention about your Trials visit?

I consider the invitation to run at this event an honor and a memorable event. The best part is that although I am reserved (and) prefer to stay out of the limelight this has provided me the opportunity to share more about masters track and field with so many people who are now just curious or shocked that people our age still run and compete.

Around here we have distance runners, cyclists and triathletes. I know there are lots of retired high school tracksters who miss track and field, and I just want to see more of us fit, fine and fabulous forties out there showing the world that track and field in indeed "a sport for life."

Rex Harvey, three Europeans in race for WMA presidency

Rex Harvey of Ohio, our former decathlon star, has thrown his hat in the ring for the presidency of World Masters Athletics, he's informed me. The vote will come in the General Assembly at Lahti, Finland, in 2009 -- midway through the World Masters Athletics Championships. They'll pick a successor to Cesare Beccalli, who died last December. The acting WMA president, Monty Hacker of South Africa, has said he won't run for a full term. But three Europeans will join the race, according to a post by Annette and Robert Koop of Germany. That might be good news for Rex.

Germany's Dieter Massin, who on Tuesday was re-elected head of the European Vetarans Athletic Association, made a pitch to delegates at the Eurovets meet in Ljubljana, Slovenia, to stick together and elect a European to lead WMA.

Massin called for "the unity of the Europeans, especially in the (Lahti) elections," he was quoted as saying.

But what if the Euros split the vote?

According to the Koops' site, three Euro-gents are running for WMA president:

-- Serge Becker of Belgium

-- Georgios Konstantopoulos, a runner in his early 50s and chairman of the Greek Masters Athletics Association

-- And 37-year-old Austrian Percy Hirsch, organizer of the 2006 Linz world masters indoor championships.

Expect one or two to drop out between now and summer 2009, since Dieter knows Rex Harvey is well-liked and respected (he's been a WMA vice president for stadia meets for years) and has a high-profile position as a member of the IAAF Veterans Committee. My sources say Georgios is favored by Massin because Georgios provides office space and a secretary to Massin.

But Rex also is mindful of history. In 1997, American Al Sheahen ran for WMA president against Sweden's Torsten Carlius and was steamrolled by Eurovotes.

Still, change is in the air. And many European delegates might like to see WMA clean up its act, especially in the wake of several poorly managed world indoor and outdoor meets.

Rex tried his mightiest to bring professionalism to the Riccione outdoor and Clermont-Ferrand indoor meets, but local organizers insisted on doing things their way, basically spitting in Rex's face (and others).

They screwed up so bad that WMA basically apologized on its Web site for mismanagement.

Others could enter the race for prez. Maybe Stan Perkins of Australia, who lost to Beccalli in 2005.

Much more to be said on this subject, including: Go, Rex! He'd make a superb WMA president.

Danny McFarlane threatens own M35 WR in 400 hurdles

A ladies pole vault record dominated headlines from yesterday's Monaco meet, but It was Danny McFarlane who had the most impressive mark. Leading most of the lap, the 36-year-old Jamaican won the 400 hurdles in a season best 48.39, just off his world age-group best of 48.32. (The listed WR is 48.93 by Merlene Ottey's ex-hubby Nat Page in 1992.) Danny's latest mark corresponds to an Open (ages 20-30) equivalent of 46.19 on the Age-Graded Tables.

The 48.32 came at the IAAF Osaka world meet last year, but officiating there must have been suspect. WMA won't touch it.

So what will it take for Danny to get credit for a world-age group record?

Ooh, ooh! I know! I know! He'll have to beat Kevin Young's open WR of 46.78. That way, the WMA records czar can be assured that no gentleman between the ages of 35 and 39 has run any faster.

And it will have to be done in the Beijing Olympic final, just to make sure officiating is up to snuff. And it'll have a few witnesses to boot! Yup, that's the ticket!

Go, Danny! You can run 1.55 seconds faster, can't you?

Olympian, 80, dressed down for running up escalator

I live for these stories. Under the headline "Man, 80, reprimanded for escalator run," UPI reports out of Farnham, England: "An 80-year-old former Olympic hurdle runner said a Farnham, England, store has threatened to ban him if he is caught running up a down escalator a second time. Peter Hildreth, who represented Britain at the Olympics in 1952, 1956 and 1960, said he used to train for his sport by running up the wrong escalators and decided to try out his old training regime as his 80th birthday approached, The Daily Mail reported Monday." A longer story is here.

The UPI account continued:

"I started doing it last month because I was turning 80. People did not see me do it to start with, I must have done it three or four times," he said.

Hildreth said he was finally caught by the head of the women's underwear department at the top of the escalator and was given a stern talking-to by store manager Graham Duerden, who said the elderly man was violating health and safety rules and setting a bad example for young people.

The former athlete said he has had his fill of his old pastime.

"I am not going to do it anymore," Hildreth said. "My wife will be annoyed about me doing it, she does not know until now."

Set a bad example?

Heck, Peter, you are Our Role Model of the Month!

Orville Rogers falls 2 seconds short of M90 WR in mile

Orville Rogers, our "Faces in the Crowd" kid last spring, ran the mile in 10:56.61 Saturday at the Texas Masters Championships, held at Coppell High School. Not bad for 90. It's better than the listed M90 world age-group record of 13:43.6 by American Herb Kirk in 1986 -- but is 2 seconds off the listed M90 American record of 10:54.62 by Bill Lauderback in June 2007. (Don't ask me why. Ask WMA records czar Sandy Pashkin.) In any case, Wayne Bennett of Dallas Masters TC sent me the info. Click here for the Texas Masters results. Some good wind-aided sprints. Nice throws, too.

Five world records in first three days of Eurovets meet

Ivar Söderlind of Sweden, one of the best masters statisticians in the world, reports on the world, European and meet records set after only three days of the Eurovets championships in Slovenia. See his compilation here. Ivar writes: "After three days of the European Veterans Championship (EVACS) in Ljubljana, I have noted 5 World Records/European Records and 21 Championship Records. In the heat (about 30 degrees above zero) it has been hard to break records in the long distances." That's 30 degrees Celsisus. In Fahrenheit terms, that's 86 degrees. (That's considered a cold snap in our South and Southwest.)

WMA regional seeks officials (no experience necessary)

World Masters Athletics, which recently noted a spate of botched world championships, is fun (and easy) to mock. But I'd prefer it not be at America's expense as well. So I was shocked to see this note in the Orlando Sentinel: "The National Training Center . . . needs volunteers for the North, Central and Caribbean Masters Track and Field Championships on Aug. 28-31. More than 100 volunteers will be needed each day. Volunteers should have good people skills and will help with events including javelin, weight throw, hammer throw, pole vault, long and triple jump, hurdles, high jump, shot put, race walking, marathon or discus. Track-and-field experience is beneficial, but not necessary. Several shifts are available."

Oy vey.

People skills indeed.

Good luck.

M50 newbie Henry James authors a pair of sub-55s in 400

I love out-of-the-woodwork stories -- when complete unknowns show up and set records. That happened over the weekend in Tumwater, Washington -- south of Seattle -- which hosted the state's Senior Games. The athlete is Henry James, and his meet record was an impressive 54.83 in the 400. He's 50. A week earlier, Henry ran 54.73 at the Seattle Masters Classic. Meg Wochnick wrote this for the local paper: "In just his fourth 400-meter race ever, Henry blew away the competition by more than eight seconds . . . while other athletes and spectators roared with cheers as he came down the homestretch. 'About four years ago, I thought (the 400) would be something fun to try," Henry said moments after crossing the finish line." The 400 "fun"?

Yeah, this guy is warped.

Here's the whole story:

It's never too late to start for Senior Games athletes
BY MEG WOCHNICK

TUMWATER -- When starting a new sport, age doesn't factor in for Albert Erickson.

Despite being the youthful age of 79, Erickson, from Monroe, recently started competing in the decathlon. He never competed in track and field in high school. And up until now, he mainly played baseball, softball and a few running events here and there.

But on Saturday, during the Washington State Senior Games track and field events at Tumwater District Stadium, Erickson won the majority of the events in which he competed.

It's only the second time that he's participated in track and field events at the annual Senior Games.

"I did a few runs earlier than that," Erickson said between events. "Mainly, I wanted to do multi-events here."

Even though he's new to the decathlon, it didn't seem to hinder him at last year's USATF national master's decathlon/heptathlon championship, either. He placed first in his 75- to 79-year-old age group.

"This year, I'm going to concentrate on multi-events," said Erickson, who competed in the pole vault, long jump, high jump, discus and javelin on Saturday. "I try to practice a little bit during the year, but when you're doing multi-events, it's difficult to find enough time to get good training in. It's the challenge of doing it, but it's also a way to stay fit."

Whether it was track or the field events, more than 1,000 athletes age 50 or older were running, jumping and throwing with an extra spring in their step.

Some shared stories from their days of competing in high school or college, while others made some bold predictions to each other before races and events.

"If I don't pull a hamstring in this, it's a good day," one 100-meter dash participant said to another while getting set in the starting blocks.

Henry James, 50, made the most of his trip up Interstate 5 on Saturday for his first Senior Games.

James, who's from Bellingham, drove to Tumwater from Portland, where his daughter's soccer team was playing in a tournament this weekend, solely to compete in the 400-meter dash.

In just his fourth 400-meter race ever, Henry blew away the competition by more than eight seconds with a meet-record time of 54.83 seconds while other athletes and spectators roared with cheers as he came down the homestretch.

The previous record in the 50-54 age group was 57.03 seconds, set by David Ortman in 2006.

"About four years ago, I thought (the 400) would be something fun to try," Henry said moments after crossing the finish line. "I used to be a distance runner, and I still try and do half-marathons and 10K's when I can. But age is catching up with me.

"I like the strategy and speed of the 400," Henry added. "It's a hard race, but it's great for the most part. It's very challenging, and I like that."

Lacey residents David and Lisbeth Naber have been competing in Senior Games events since 1990, although not always in Washington.

They moved to South Sound in the mid-'90s from Pennsylvania and used to go to other states' Senior Games and try to qualify for nationals before Washington offered such opportunities.

Lisbeth, 80, won the shot put in the 80-84 age group at 13 feet, 5 inches, just shy of her 13-9 mark in last year's event.

David, 78, won the 1,500-meter race walk in his age group, finishing with a time of 13:14.36.

"I'm 80 years old. I've done the shot put many times," Lisbeth Naber said. "But I'm not very good at it. I usually play baseball, but I didn't do it because I didn't train for it."

At the young age of 91, Lacey resident George Rowswell was the oldest competitor in the track and field events. And just like he did last year, he won the shot put and discus in his 90-94 age group with throws of 15-1 and 30-7, respectively.

Also held at Tumwater High School were the 3-on-3 half-court basketball games and free-throw and hot-shot shooting that took place inside the gymnasium, where dozens of athletes participated.

Senior Games events continue today and Monday at various sites around South Sound.

BTW, the 400 record that Henry beat -- by Dave Ortman -- was relatively soft. Dave ran his 57.03 at the age of 53. (And was only one of several events Dave entered that year.)

This year, now M55, Dave returned to the Washington Senior Games and accomplished this ironman feat:

In his first event, the 200, he clocked a meet age-group record of 25.70.

Then he took two long jumps off his non-jumping leg to save wear and tear on
the other one. Took second with a 16-3, about two feet short of his usual.

Then he ran the 100 in 12.55, another meet record, and then took some high jumps, winning at 5-2.

Next he tackled the 400, winning in 57.76, another meet record.

Then Dave did the triple jump, setting yet another meet record with only two tries: 33-5.

Dave writes: "So five firsts, one second, and four M55-59 meet records and no new injuries. When I first started attending the Senior Games, most folks looked older. Now some of them are starting to look YOUNGER. What's up with that?"

Next up for Dave is Spokane nationals. He's entered in these events:

Thursday - Pentathlon (LJ, DIS, 200m JAV, 1500m)
Friday - 100m (semi) and open LJ
Saturday - 100m, High Jump
Sunday - 400m Hurdles, Triple Jump

Now go get some rest, Dave.

You, too. Henry. (He'll be in Spokane as well.)

TV profiles Steve Robbins, 'world's fastest Medicare' man

TV coverage of masters track is usually cliche-ridden and one-dimensional, but a Fox affiliate in Seattle got it just about right this past week with a 2-minute, 45-second profile of M65 sprint champion Steve Robbins. They showed him on the track, of course. But they also explored his author side and interviewed his wife, Laura -- who looks about 40 years younger. (So that's your secret, huh, Steve?) His sense of humor shines through when he refers to himself as the world's fastest medicare recipient. But given his history of injuries (which he summarizes), Steve appears grateful just to be able to run track. As should we all. Click here to view the clip, which I extracted from the regular Web site. His section starts about 2 minutes into the video.

But it wouldn't be TV without some crazy gaffes.

In Aaron Levine's report, he refers to Steve as "one of the fastest men in the world" (leaving out the critical qualifier "for his age"). Aaron also says Steve broke the 200 record (for M65) by 2 seconds. (It was two-tenths of a second.)

Other than that, it was fine. (Here's another, larger version of the clip. Again, it starts 2 minutes in. You can move a small <- bar -> just beneath the screen to advance it.)

Stay well, Steve. You have a date with a sub-25 in Spokane.

Eurovets results being posted expeditiously -- and well

The folks in Slovenia have a good handle on this Web thing. Click here for results of the European Veterans Athletic Championships -- the biggest outdoor masters meet on the planet this year. Decathlon results show how sophisticated the hosts in Ljubjana are about giving us complete info. They aim to impress, of course. Here's what Dr. Milan Zver, the nation's minister of education and sport, said on the site: "Allow me to express how overwhelmed and proud I am that Slovenia was given the opportunity to organise the EVACS 2008, an event, which can easily be ranked among the largest competitions ever held after the Slovenian independence in 1991."

Always one clueless idiot in the crowd: 'Ottey, quit!'

Under the headline "Hang it up Merlene, please!" Paul Reid of the Jamaican Observer newspaper writes: "Merlene Ottey, the former Jamaican track and field star, had her dreams of competing in an individual event at eight straight Olympics shattered on Tuesday after failing in her attempt to make the 'B' standard while competing at a low-key meet in Slovenia. News reports are that one of the most recognisable names in track and field competed in the meet in pouring rain and could only run 11.60 seconds, falling .28 seconds from the standard that would allow her to compete."

Reid continued:

Ottey, the winner of nine Olympic medals, a record in track and field for women, was hoping to set yet another record - the oldest person at age 48 to compete in a track event at the Games.

Records are nothing new to her as earlier this week she set yet another World Record when she ran 11:50-plus seconds in the heats at the Slovenian Championships, fastest ever by someone that age. She was second in the finals in just over 11:60 seconds and so had one last ditch chance of meeting the minimum requirement to be named in the Slovenian team.

A bit of perspective here. The organisers of the event give athletes wishing to compete at the Games a period of time to meet a minimum requirement if they wish to take part. In this case, the women's 100m, the athletes had from January 1, 2007 to run 11.32 seconds for the A standard or 11.42 seconds for the B standard.

Given her glorious record in the sport, at least up to 2000 when she last competed at the highest level for Jamaica while winning 34 medals at major meets including 14 at the IAAF World Championships, does 'Queen Merlene' need this ignominy at the end of her CV?

In the 2004 Olympics, competing for Slovenia, she managed to get to the semi-finals of the 100m after running 11.24 seconds, ironically finishing behind two Jamaicans, but could only muster 11.21 seconds in the second round and was eliminated.

We all thought, hoped, and prayed then that at 44 years old when most if not all, other athletes had gone into another sphere of their lives, she would ride off into the sunset and enjoy the life of a track and field royalty that she has earned.

Instead Ottey, in my opinion, opts to continue to erode her rich legacy.

Four years ago the athletes lining up beside her in a race may have been in awe of this legend. Today all the youngsters who line up against her must be licking their lips at the chance to beat a legend at their own game and add a notch or two to their belts.

Based on the feedback that we have heard from various quarters here, there are many who are rooting for Ottey to make the Games and some are even arguing that given her contributions to the sport, the IOC should give her a 'wild card' entry into the 100m event.

Olympic berths are earned, not handed out based on sentiments and past accomplishments. Again in my opinion, Ottey deserves much more than handouts and should be the one dictating her future, not the other way around.

One of the problems with the majority of the Jamaican sports fan is that they appear to have special glasses that allow them to see their heroes in their heydays and not when they are on their way down.

Statistically Ottey's best is at least six years behind her and the more she runs, the more she erodes what she took decades to accomplish.

Hopefully this failure will finally convince her that the time has come to finally hang them up and start helping in the shaping of the next generation of track and field stars.

Masters Athlete magazine posts free weight-training issue

Masters Athlete magazine (formerly GeezerJock) is expanding into weight training with a separate title called Masters Strength & Fitness. The first issue is free and downloadable here. Even though it has a weight-lifter on the cover, it's not just for big husky guys who do Olympic or power lifts in dark, stinky gyms. The first issue even mentions the special needs of women. The magazine cites track and field among sports that can benefit from weight training.

In an article headlined "How rest builds muscles," we learn:

Researchers at Ball State University found that women recovered faster than men from a training session involving five sets of high-weight, low-repetition bench press exercises. While men required 48 hours post-session before they could replicate their pre-test five-rep maximum, women were able to reach that goal within four hours.
Editor Sean Callahan also writes:
We want you to be an integral part of this publication. We're looking for competitors like yourself to write articles, to send us letters to the editor, to contribute photographs for use in the publication. We want to know about what exercises work for you and what nutrition approach improves your performance -- no matter what sport you favor.

Let us know what competitions we should be covering and what athletes in your sport deserve some ink. Please email me at scallahan@masters-athlete.com with any story ideas or thoughts on how we can make this magazine stronger.

But don't tell Tom Fahey about this! He'll think he's died and gone to heaven. (We need him here on earth!)

Nadine O'Connor raises own WR in W65 pole vault

Nadine O'Connor of Del Mar, California, improved her own W65 age-group world record in the vault last weekend at a single-event meet at San Diego State University that drew 18 entrants. Called the Friday Night Summer Vault (with complete results here), the meet saw Nadine, 66, clear three heights on her first try, ending with a jump of 3.06 meters (10-0 1/2) to better her own listed WR of 3.05 (10-0) set in March 2007. Nadine was grateful that head official Richard Fox made sure all the conditions were right for record consideration.

The best vault Friday was by 52-year-old Charlie Brown, who cleared 4.30 (14-1 1/4). The world record for that age group is Gary Hunter's 4.75 (15-7).

On her jumps, Nadine reports:

Rich Fox and others are very kindly putting on these vault meets at SD State. We are so lucky to have these fun and well run meets in our backyard. I entered my first meet there a couple weeks ago and found that I could run about 65 feet without my hip hurting too much and did much better than I expected.

So last Friday Rich was kind enough to have three officials there in case I made a record. The measurement, time, etc. is such a pain for everyone, especially the other athletes, that I only went for a height which I was pretty confident to make.

I wasn't pleased with my technique, but I was excited to make all three of my height attempts on the first try. The officials, Rich, and the competitors have been very patient and encouraging. I hope to try again this Friday.

In addition to the Friday meets, Rich and others have been conducting weekly clinics Wednesday evenings. I haven't been able to go, but I have heard lots of positive comments about them.

Just FYI: Nadine's performance corresponds on the Age-Graded Tables to an Open (ages 20-30) equivalent of 6.23 meters (20-5 1/4). Incredible.

Nice jump, Nadine. Stay healthy and go higher!

Merlene Ottey's quest for eighth Olympics falls short

Merlene Ottey, still a sprint queen at 48
This would make a HELLUVA movie -- how Merlene Ottey at 48 jetted from city to city in the final week before today's qualifying deadline, racing to run 100 meters a few tenths faster than her season best, which already was the fastest any woman had ever run in her late 40s. But nope. Forget any film. Forget her chances at competing in an incredible eighth Olympic Games. This dream was just too impossible. But give her credit for trying and Slovenia for supporting her. And the world press for taking heed. She got barrels of ink yesterday.

Here's how one report summarized Merlene's quest:

Jamaican sprinting legend Merlene Ottey failed in her last remaining attempt to make the Olympics for an eighth time in Beijing as she failed to make the 100m qualifying time in Slovenia.

Ottey was bidding to become the first athlete to compete in the Olympic Games eight times, but she failed to run fast enough in a meeting in Slovenia.

48-year-old Ottey, who now represents Slovenia, finished second at the meeting in Maribor and just missed out on making the Games by the narrowest of margins.

"Conditions were bad, she had wind in her chest and she missed the qualifying time by 28 hundredths of a second," said Robert Rudelic of the Athletic Club Poljane which organised the meeting.

Ottey has been at every Olympics since 1980 in Moscow, and has nine medals in total - more than any other woman in track and field history.

After taking part in six Olympics for Jamaica, Ottey competed at the Athens Games in 2004 for her adopted country of Slovenia, where she became a citizen in 2002.

Ottey also won two World Championship titles and 14 medals overall, and became the oldest Olympic medallist in athletics history when winning a silver as part of the Jamaican relay team in Sydney.

Ottey also now has an Olympic bronze from 2000 in the 100m after Marion Jones returned her medals after admitting to taking steroids.

An Olympic gold has always evaded Ottey though, with a record six bronzes in her trophy cabinet, the first won on her Olympic debut in Moscow 28 years ago.

Her Slovenian coach Srdjan Djordjevic insists that Ottey will stay in training and look to take part in big athletic events across the globe.

Apparently, she ran 11.60, outside the "A" standard of 11.32. Still, 11.60 is nearly a second faster than the listed (albeit unofficial) single-age record of 12.50 by Phil Raschker in 1995. Allergies and all, Merlene had an incredible season -- and made a great attempt at Beijing.

Seattle Masters Classic: small meet with some big marks

Becca Gillespy and George Mathews share this results link for the Seattle Masters Classic held this past weekend in West Seattle. It wasn't a humongous turnout, but many fine marks were recorded, including a nice 12.67 for 100 by M65 champion Steve Robbins, rounding into great shape for Spokane. (He ran 12.53 in May, though.)

Here are the results in case link goes dead:

Seattle Masters Classic 2008 - 7/19/2008 to 7/20/2008
West Seattle, WA

Seattle Masters Classic 2008 - 7/19/2008 to 7/20/2008

Sims, Leek run wild at Western States in Sacramento

M70 sprinter Gary Sims and and W75 multi-eventer Edythe Leek were among the stars of the Western States Masters International Invitational over the weekend in Sacramento. Gary ran the 100 in 13.98, the deuce in 29.22 and the 4 in 64.99. Co-meet director Mary Woo also reports: "Liz Palmer (had) huge PRs in the 80 hurdles (ran solo) and the shot. Amanda Scotti (is) a "newbie" to keep on your radar for sure, along with Kathleen Poe. Jeff Mann returning to the 800 after a few years absent from that event, and throwers galore! Had an amazing bunch of PAUSATF officials and volunteers. . . . Randy Sturgeon (was a) superb announcer! Plan to make this event a mainstay on the schedule in years to come."

Here are results from Sacramento:
