Brazil worlds website is up again after maintenance shutdown
Sometime today, the website of the Porto Alegre world masters championships was restored to life after being shut for maintenance. Several people called my attention to the link being dead, with a note about “account suspended.” That didn’t look good, so I wrote some WMA friends. I won’t take credit for site being up, but pestering helps! You also can keep tabs on the LOC by following its Twitter account and “liking” its Facebook page. The site now features a “Start List,” with links like USATF’s Status of Entries page for nationals. But it’s still early for heat sheets. The meet is in October. But bring your own snacks. Brazil is a pricey place, reports The New York Times.

Well, I guess I was wrong (again), as the turnout seems excellent. Looks like there are 67 or 68 women in the 800 already, and I counted 67 in the women’s shot put. The latter includes such luminaries as U.S. Hall of Famer Christel Donley and Britain’s sprinter-thrower Evaun Williams.
The 800 has a lot of stars, including Lorraine Jasper, Jeanne Daprano, and numerous others. I am surprised at the number of entrants, but maybe we are closer to the entry deadline than I realize (have paid essentially no attention to this meet. Don’t even know where it is except that it is in Brazil.)
Compared to Riccione WMA’s 2007 the racewalking fields on the men’s side seems small so far, think I had 34 entered in my age group at Riccione, at Brazil there is 11 men entered in my current age group of 50-54
I figure there are a lot of Americans waiting to see if they are hurt after NSG. Still have until August 10 to enter. BTW – I bought my flight in December and got business class for $1,750. Very surprised by that.
Christel, I used $50 and $20 bills and had no problems. They have ATM machines, but some limit how much money you can withdraw during a certain time period. Do not totally rely on ATM machines. You need to take some cash with you. Try to blend in. This is not always easy, but uniforms with large USA letters on the back do not help.
Take some small bills with you for tipping
