Carmelo Rado adds M80 discus WR to collection, along with pent
A story posted before the World Masters Games in Turin was headlined: CARMELO RADO, A MAN WHO SETS A RECORD EVERY TIME HE THROWS. But he set no bests in Italy. Didnāt compete. But a month after turning 80 in August, there he goes again. āThe Italian Rado Carmelo ā¦ set two world records in the throws during a competition in Aosta (ITA),ā reports the WMA site. He scored 5,355 points in the throws pentathlon, blasting the listed M80 WR of 4,846 by Finlandās Leo Saarinen in 2009, and his discus that day flew 39.46 meters (130-1), nearly 6 feet past the listed best of 37.86 (124-2) by Finlandās Osmo Renvall way back in 1991. As noted here in 2007, Carmelo is a 1960 Olympian (seventh in the Rome discus). And heās owned the event in recent years. He now is the M70, M75 and M80 record-man. Besides the 1-kilo discus, his pentathlon marks were 38.08 in the 3Kg hammer, 12.48 (40-11 1/2) in the 3K shot, 30.60 (100-5) in the 400-gram javelin and 17.92 (58-9 1/2) in the 12-pound weight. Yowza. Heās not listed as an entrant at Porto Alegre worlds, but heās earned his rest. Congrats to Carmelo.

During August, the month of the World Masters Games in Turin, an amazingly fit Venetian, Carmelo Rado, will celebrate his eightieth birthday and it seems that he just canāt wait to qualify to compete in the M80 masterās category so that he can start rewriting the records in his speciality event, the discus. This senior athlete has a very respectable competitive record behind him including seventh place in the Rome Olympics of 1960, an eighth place in the Europeans in Belgrade in 1962 and a host of international appearances, each time securing excellent results.
He is one of the many athletes who have chosen to return to competition, embracing the masters concept and in so doing have garnered a series of incredible successes and above all, national, European and world records. As well as the discus, Rado has also made a name for himself in the shot put and the short handle hammer, all disciplines which form part of the Throws Pentathlon which he is usually ends up winning.
Now Carmelo Radoās goal is the M80 category world record which has stood since 1991 after the Finn, Osmo Rewall, at the age of 80 succeeded in throwing a distance of 36.86 metres. But that is a distance which is well within the reach of the athlete from Oderzo who is the holder of world records in the M70 category with 55.27 metres and the M75 with 49.21 metres.
Rado, who competes for Olimpia Amatori Rimini, will celebrate his birthday on 4 August, by which time the 2013 World Masters Games flag will have been flying over Turin for two days. It will be an event during which many records will be broken in every discipline and every age category. Who knows whether we might not witness the flight across the sky of Turin of the winning discus thrown by an Italian athlete.

The “the 5.45Kg hammer” you mention is actually a 12# weight. And the “3kg weight” should be the 3k shot put.
