Did an M55 Brazilian really run 800 in 2:03.09?

Online results can be mystifying. Latest example: the South American Masters Championships list an M55 mark for 800 meters that’s pretty mind-boggling — a 2:03.09 by Brazil’s Julio Quirino in Rio de Janeiro. Annette and Robert Koop in Germany seem to consider this mark legit. They say it beats the listed (hand-timed) WMA world age-group record of 2:03.7 by South Africa’s Stan Immelman in 2001. But Martin Gasselsberger of mastersathletics.net lists the 2:03.09 as questionable. (Putting ??? before the time.)

Here’s how the result appears online:
M55 800 Meter Run
================================================================================
Name Age Team Seed Finals Points
================================================================================
Section 1
1 QUIRINO, JULIO M55 BRASIL,Belo Horizon 2:03,09
2 TORRICO, RONAY M58 BRASIL,São José, SC 2:24,11
3 CARVALHO, ALCINO M55 BRASIL,Belo Horizon 2:25,68
4 SILVA, JOSE M55 BRASIL,Rio de Janei 2:29,50
5 BRUM, CARLOS M56 BRASIL,Rio de Janer 2:52,51
6 GODOY, LUIS M59 URUGUAI 3:00,97
7 ASSIS, LUIZ M55 BRASIL,Rio de Janei 3:28,96
If accurate, the mark corresponds to an Open (ages 20-30) equivalent of 1:42.61 on the WMA Age-Graded Tables.
Curiously, the name “Julio Quirino” doesn’t appear anywhere on masterstrack.com — not in any rankings or results. So I’m betting this mark is wrong.
I’m writing to various Brazilian and other track authorities to see if the mark is legit (in which case it’s one of the best masters performances of the season) or a typo.
Stay tuned.

    Hi
    I think this time can’t to be right. I found nothing from Mr. Julio Quirino in my database.
    Greetings

    Nada chance. That’s gotta be a “mis sprint.” There’s a Julio Cesar Quirino, in that age range, who ran a 42.20 10K a couple a years ago.

    If he ran a 203 then his first lap would have probably been 60 seconde or faster.The winner in the open 400 didnt run that fast but Mr. Quirno didn’t run the 400 although he could have won it easily.Neither did he run the 1500 which he could have won without breaking a sweat if he is capable of running a 203

    I am naturally biased because Stan Immelman (current record holder) is my husband. Does this chap, Quirino, have any kind of track history. Stan competed in the medals in the 800 in the 1999 & 2001 world champs, with a personal best of 2.02 at age 54 before going on to break the 55 WR a couple of months later. Can Quirino’s time not be verified by the SAmerican officials and what about all the WR application requirements to ratify the record ? My guess its a typo error, more like 2.23.09 if you look at the other placings in the race.
    Wow, Nolan got close enough with 2.3.08 and he is a great athlete !!!

    800m world records are hard to break. Those who believe everything they read, like the Germans, Annette Koop & Co, end up with egg in their faces, and hopefully, apologies !
    I hope to take on the M60 800m world record soon, preferably at the coast, it will definitely happen before the end of the South African Season (end April).
    Ciao
    Stan Immelman
