Did Sylvie win silver? W75 Ah Kang poses with Lyon world medal
World Masters Athletics posted a link to a report on Africans winning medals at Lyon. One is mystifying. The African masters site shows W75 Sylvie Ah Kang of Mauritius standing alone, displaying a silver medal. But for what event? Lyon results show she was DQ’d in the 80-meter hurdles, didn’t qualify for the finals in the 100 and was seventh in the 8K cross country race. No relays either for Mauritius (an island nation in the Indian Ocean). So what gives? I’m looking into this. (German masters blogger Alfred Hermes also notes a legit M55 bronze in pole vault for a Tunisian gent.)
Here are results for Sylvie:
10 Ah Kang, Sylvie W76 Mauritius 21.49 -1.3 1

Christa will be next to her. Disqualified afterwards?
Christa Bortignon - December 26, 2015
No, the DQ was already posted with the results outside the stadium before the medal presentation.

It’s an odd photo since the podium setting isn’t even correct: the number “2” isn’t clearly visible and the podium position for first place was higher than for second.

It’s all quite strange. Sylvie and Christa were the only two W75 short hurdlers, and the race ran with the W80s. I don’t have many photos of it, and can’t recall Sylvie’s DQ, though she doesn’t look all that happy in the post race group shot! That podium shot isn’t normal. This is what the podium looked like in use: http://www.tomphillipsphotos.co.uk/lyon2015110815/slides/_MMP9401.html

The picture title says it’s for hurdles.

Maybe she just wanted to take a picture with a medal. And, “maybe” whoever posted the news in Mauritius, Africa took her word for it.
It appears to me, that because she was one of only two people in her hurdles race, she “claimed” silver when she told her people at her federation

Tom Phillips photo tells it all – not a photo taken at the awards in Lyon.

I got a note from the person who witnessed the Silvie picture:
There was no ceremony going on. [Silvie] asked me if I could take a picture of her and that man while he put the medal around her neck because she had missed her ceremony. This was not on the podium but by the chairs there. … Then she went to the podium and the man took some pictures.

I understand her disappointment, but she did not win a silver medal. She was DQ’d in her hurdle race.

If you didn’t place, why lie like you did? Please exhibit good sportmanship and work hard to place next time.
