Don McGee delivers on USATF grant, completes 100-200 double

Emma McGowan won W45 200 in 25.51.

Emma McGowan won the W45 200 in 25.51.

Had any doubt money can be motivating? Monday in Perth, M55 sprinter Don McGee won the 200 in a wind-legal 24.44 to sweep the 1 and 2. In August, Don and Sabra Harvey were awarded $1,500 travel grants by the USATF Masters T&F Committee to defray Aussie expenses. Sabra spun her grant into 800 WR gold, of course. Don came through with a double. Other Americans claiming second sprint titles were W45 Emma McGowan (25.51), M65 Bill Collin (25.55w), W75 Kathy Bergen (34.39w), M80 Robert Cozens (31.86w) and W80 Irene Obera (37.25w). With six golds, Team USA again won the Sprint Nation title. Great Britain and Australia both won five titles at 200. Perth keeps cranking out results here. G’job, mates! Lemme know your favorite marks down under.

Emma’s achievement is all the more remarkable in that she is nearing the end of her age group and just keeps getting better. She went Gold/Silver in the 100/200 in Lyon and Gold/Gold here in Perth. Humble and loved by everyone on the American team, she is a true champion in the tradition of the great Irene Obera.

  2. Peter L. Taylor - November 1, 2016

Yes, Rob, Emma McGowan has done a wonderful job in her relatively short masters career. I and many others really appreciate her talent and her nice disposition.

I should mention Don McGee as well, as he was right on the brink of stardom but got relatively little attention. Now that he has doubled at the worlds it will be hard to shortchange him.

You, Rob Jerome, should also be commended. You have done yeoman work with the camera, and your reporting is excellent. By the way, Rob, what is it like at the main stadium?

I’m talking about seating, amenities, noise (i.e., cheering), announcing, size of the crowds, length of each day’s program, etc.

  3. Alan Kolling - November 1, 2016

I agree with everyone’s comments about Rob Jerome. He is everywhere, trying to cover all age groups, all events, and all three venues, some far away from others. His contributions, and his support of all of the athletes in Perth are, in the words of the Mastercard ad, “priceless.”

    Pete,
In response to your questions about the main stadium, the only real drawback is that results are flashed on the screen in lane order rather than time order, so it is difficult to see quickly who came in first, second, third, etc. A little reprogramming of the system would easily solve the problem,

The announcing has improved greatly over the first couple of days when Emma McGowan was introduced as Canadian.

The crowds are substantial and lively. For example, the stands were pretty full for the entirety of 200 meters yesterday.

There are plenty of food and drink stands in the Athletes Village right outside the main stadium so nobody goes hungry or thirsty.

A big plus over Lyon is free transportation. Shuttle buses run frequently from the stadium to a light rail station, from which trains to Perth run every 15 minutes. All told, it takes about 30 to 40 minutes to get from the central business district of Perth to the main stadium.

Organizationally, I am hearing a few grumbles about the number of prelims getting rolled over into semis or finals, Athletes make their way out to the stadium only to be told their race has been rolled over due to drop-outs and to come back the next day. Not sure how that can be avoided, but it is happening not infrequently.

  6. Peter L. Taylor - November 2, 2016

Another good report, Rob. I hope to see you in Albuquerque in 3.5 months. BTW, I just watched the feed of the M80 200; the announcer thought they were going to have two qualifying heats, but before the gun went off he was able to say that it had become a final (won by our Bob Cozens).

This is a problem that we had in both Albuquerque and Grand Rapids; things get very fluid, and not everyone knows what the new order of things is after a major change.

  7. Rob Jerome - November 2, 2016

    Pete,

If you take a look at the results on the meet’s website, you can see how many prelim cancellations and rollovers there were today (Day 7). Many athletes with rollovers just wanted to run their finals, but apparently that goes against the rules. Kind of a waste of time to travel all the way out to the stadium for nothing.

  8. Rob Jerome - November 2, 2016

Also, Pete, as far as things being different about this world championship, the Russian ban is surely being felt….but that’s a whole other issue.

  9. Emma McGowan - November 3, 2016

Thank you Rob and Peter for your comments it means a lot to me.
    Bill Collins is my hero.
Don McGhee is a quiet man but he knows how to bring the show on the track! 2 awesome and humble men. I was so happy for them to win the 100-200m.
Rob is my favorite photographer at all times. He knows how to take the right picture with the emotion and the effort we are getting in each race or field event. Btw Rob I forgot they thought I was Canadian at least that brought the Canadian luck cause they won for 2020

  10. Rob Jerome - November 4, 2016

Thank you for your nice words, Emma. Being on the field as I am allows me, beyond photographing the results, to share in the emotions of the athletes. Your emotion after winning the 200 was so real and heartfelt..it spoke volumes about all the hard work and dedication that went into your victory.
