Dozens get Philly love in Penn Relays masters relays, races

At least one American masters record was set today at the Penn Relays: The Houston Elite TC 4×1 team of Ron Johnson, Charles Allie, Richard Riddle and Bill Collins clocked 48.44 to beat the USATF club record of 50.9 by the legendary Corona Del Mar TC quartet of Bill Morales, Payton Jordan, Clarence Killion and Al Guidet way back in 1978. But the national and world M60 record of 47.93 set at Sacramento worlds is safe. The bulk of masters relays and sprints were today. (See results here.) And Bill Collins fell shy of the 11.8 hand-timed AR for 100 by clocking an auto-timed 11.98. Still an amazing mark. Unsure of conditions. Let us know if any of the ladies teams set records. Meanwhile at the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa, Philly’s own Nick Berra was upset by Lance Elliott in the monster field 800. I interviewed Lance last year.

Philadelphia Inquirer's Charles Fox got great shots of a grayer Bill in 4x1.

Here are results from Drake:

A great time of 11.45 by Allan Tissenbaum at age 52 to have the fastest 100m time of any age group.

How is 11.8 hand (hand means nothing)better than 11.98. You add .24 (as they say you should)to the hand and it’s still slower than 11.98… Come-on!

Conditions were chilly but the 100m had a big tailwind.

Congrats Lance-you have made some great progress since February-it must have been a thrill to win Drake!

Athena W50 4×400 Meter Team of Lorraine Jasper, Julie Hayden, Kathy Haubrich and Cheryl Bellaire bettered the listed American Club Record (4:50.54) by running 4:41.52. Peter Taylor generously agreed to handle collecting the relevant signatures, and information from the officials-Quite a challenge at Penn Relays. He also had paperwork for several other record applications. It was a wonderful surprise to see Peter at the meet. We wish him continued healing, wellness and good health following his stroke.

Sprint Masters W40 4x100M (Toccata Murphy, Donna Lawrence, Ruthlyn Green-Webster and Renee Henderson were very impressive in running 51.12 to win the W40+ race. 9 women’s teams ran.
Athena Track Club A (Gaby Grebski, Shemayne Williams, Maryline Roux and Charmaine Roberts ran 4:14.61 to win the W40 4x400M race in a field of 11 women’s teams. Congratulations to all the masters women that ran. We represented well!

Conditions and timing for the 4×100 Meters were good. The 4×400 Meters was more challenging with a long wait in the bull pen in cold temps and a head wind on the home straight.

Finally, thank you to Phil Felton & Peter Taylor for all you do. Glad that you were able to run in both relay races Phil!

best part of Penn was seeing some old friends return after LONG injury roads traveled.
Ed Gonera and Sal Allah then just go ahead and get it done in the 50m 4×400

It felt so good seeing masters run so well, again.
It was great seeing you as well, Tony…. And also to see Ed on the track running 400m after a 5 yr abscence from his -I believe- signature event.

My calves held-up, and was able to bring it home for SFA with relative ease….Now, just stay healthy, and get in condition to do some great running this year.

Kudos to all of you !!

I agree with Julie….thanks to Peter and Phil…it was great for my son’s high school team to see the Masters run…mom was cool that day….

Job well done to Houston Elite M60 4x100M relay. All the hard work of getting in shape and the training shows why you all are at the top of podium, dispite any set back with training on the track. LoL GMJ.
