Early reactions to WMA meet are favorable

Reviews are trickling in. And the San Sebastian meet is getting some boffo ratings from the athletes. One friend wrote me: “There are 13 computers in the registration hall so I’m on one sending messages … The main stadium is impressive; all final races will be there.â€

The athlete continued:
“There is covered seating for both stadiums. Yesterday I was walking by a couple of restaurants and bars in the city and could see their televisions broadcasting a track meet somewhere in Europe, and the pole vault was being televised! Track and field is no doubt a popular pastime for these people.â€
Co-webmaster Dave Clingan, preparing for his M50 800 prelims, sent this quick note: “Just arrived in San Seb yesterday afternoon. Beautiful stadium and adjacent facilities. There is an Internet area here for athletes, but it is in constant use. May have trouble getting access, but will try from time to time. Weather so far is gorgeous. Got a USA team meeting supposedly in about 5 mins so I´ll be logging off now.â€
Feel free, San Sebians, to adding your own comments — if you can swing a stretch at the Internet terminals.
Best of luck to all of you!

Greetings from San Sebastian! These race officials really know how to keep the schedule on time. All my races have been within minutes of the scheduled times.
The city is full of athletes, and we recognize each other mainly by the green neck ribbons holding our blue cedientials. It’s a knowing wave and an instant friendship and that´s one of the things this world stage provides. Of course, all the American athletes have bonded. A small group of us came upon another large group of Americans sitting at a cafe, and we made such a loud scene greeting each other and finding out the day’s news. It does feel like a large fraternity.
