Melitta Czerwenka-Nagel is an absolutely amazing athlete. At age 76 she set a number of very impressive world records and runs as if decades younger than her chronological age. As one looks ahead to the next age group and at the records being set, it is pretty darn intimidating to think that those are the standards that I have to look at in 5 years.
I admire the accomplishments of Karla del Grande but frankly I hope Melitta wins the IAAF award, she has set impressive records from the 800 m up to the half marathon – a truly amazing accomplishment. My vote is for Meilitta, a splendid athlete and a very nice person as well. My hat is off to her.
Arthur Thomson is pretty amazing as well. He was a champion walker in his youth competing for Great Britain in the 1962 European Championships. He made a veterans comeback 2 years ago and I have a picture of me ahead of him in a race. I suspect that will be the only time I have that privelege. This year Arthur, who is older than my father, is 2 minutes faster than me over 5km and 13 minutes faster than me over 20km.
In this year’s BMAF track championships a lot of the younger veteran racewalkers were relieved that Arthur competed in the older vets and ladies races instead of in the younger vets races as he would have beaten most of us!
I’d like to be like Arthur when I grow up 🙂
