Greatest day in masters history for quarter-miling? 4 WRs set!

Olympian Marie Mathieu at 2009 Lahti worlds.

Porto Alegre’s main track is at CETE — Centro Estadual de Treinamento Esportivo (or State Center for Sports Training). It may go down in masters history for hosting the greatest quarter-mile races of all time. But mainly for winning marks, not depth. At least four world age-group 400-meter records were set today (Saturday) at worlds: W55 Marie Mathieu of Puerto Rico in 1:00.56, W60 Karla Del Grande of Canada in 1:06.24, W70 Riet Jonkers-Slegers of the Netherlands in 1:15.81 and M85 Yoshiyuki Shimizu of Brazil in 1:20.46. Also notable were two Americans just off WRs: M65 Charles Allie (56.60) and M75 Bob Lida (1:06.31). So whose time was best? According to the Age-Graded Tables, Yoshiyuki’s mark has a 101.91 age-graded percentage (with an equivalent-to-open-time of 42.37), edging Marie’s 101.6 percent (46.85). But note that Charles’ 56.6 would have beat gold medalist Stephen Peters in M60 (57.13) and would have won silver in M55! Marie, BTW, is a 1984 Olympian in the 4 and 4×4.

Here are notable 400s from today’s results:

According to a Dave Ortman comment, CETE track was striped only days before the meet. so record certification is not assured.

Great times by some big names, and a lot of satisfaction, I am sure, for some athletes who have missed out previously. The M40 race must have been a real barn burner, with Eric Prince running 51.97 at age 44 and still finishing only third.

Charles Allie (M60) and Karla Del Grande continue to show what superstars look like. And what’s this, someone ran 47.37 in a race in which no one else broke 50? Oh, wait, it was Antwon Dussett (“The Truth”).

  3. Peter Taylor - October 26, 2013

Of course, I meant M65 for Charles Allie, not M60. Need I point out that Charles was only 1.76 seconds behind the 8th-place finisher in M35?

  4. Steepledude - October 26, 2013

Electronic starters gun wasnt very loud. Surface looks good but some marks on track missing and no wording printed yet. Shuttle Bus service great (and free).

Ken, recheck the 400m final races from WAVA-Buffalo in 1995. I think you will find that the 400m records were falling like dominos.

In any “event” the weather for the Port Alegre 400m finals for the men was cool although windy. The track felt very soft so there were fast times on a not so fast track.

The Women 400m finals, which followed the mens, was not so lucky as torrential rain fell. One clap of thunder occurred during the ready-set commands, leading several runners to take off and others looking around in alarm. Weather forecast for Sunday relays and Mens Wt. Pent is for much nicer weather.

    Buffalo 1995 results are here:

    I’ll review later for WRs.

  7. Warren Graff - October 27, 2013

Speaking of WMA ’95 in Buffalo, the race I recall was probably the fastest M50 400 ever, where the first five finishers were under 53
    Steve Robbins 51.63 USA
    Peter Crombie 52.03 AUS
    Harold Morioka 52.16 CAN
    Roy Fearnall 52.82 AUS
    Mel Fields 52.93 USA
    Lloyd Hart 53.44 USA
    Fred Turner 54.26 AUS
Afterward Mel Fields said that he ran faster in this race than in high school

  8. Ron Johnson - October 27, 2013

Latricia Dendy is a determined young lady. I knew she’d she’d top off her already great performances with a 400 gold.
Charles Allie may have a warm smile but on the track he’s the baby face assassin.Imagine the results if someone actually pushed him.66.31 after
    victories in the 100 & 200.
Finally in regards to Bob Lida and his accomplishments too numerous to name, I want to be like him when I grow up.

  9. David E. Ortman (M60), Seattle, WA - October 27, 2013

Sumday report. Sunday was steeplechase (otherwise known as the swimbadden) in the morning with relays in the afternoon. A bit cool and cloudy in the morning. Just right for the steeplechase water jump where several competitors were observed completly submerged. Lucky, life guards were standing by.

The afternoon relays are the usual circus with delays and pulled muscles and other baton misques. The weather is glorious. Just what a track meet should be. Warm, fluffy clouds overhead. Great weather conditions. Hard to tell the results as several of the age groups were run in sections, but it appears that the USA M50 and M70 4×100 teams were DQed. The M60 4×100 relay was giving Great Britain a run for our money, when USA number two runner had a pull, but still managed to get the baton to USA number three runner for what looks like a 2nd place. M60 4×400 relay were down to there last two alternates but also managed a 2nd place.

So ends WMA-Porto Alegre 2013. Adios.

  10. Peter Taylor - October 27, 2013

Dave, any ideas on why the US M50, M60, and M70 4 x 100 teams were ALL disqualified? Passing out of the zone, running out of lane, impeding other teams, entering ineligible people? Seems quite mysterious and statistically improbable for all three to be knocked out.

On the 400, I agree with Ron Johnson (post no. 8) that LaTrica Dendy is pretty terrific.

  11. David E. Ortman (M60), Seattle, WAa - October 27, 2013

Peter, sometimes you can chalk up DQs to the five minutes of baton practice that seems to take place right before the call to the call tent. In the case of the M50s and M60s it appears that injury was the cause, leading to an out of lane (if not an out of body) experience. Of the three, the M70s seems to be the classic zone violation. So no real pattern.

It was also odd in the Mens 400m to see DQs for lane violations.

End of the meet medal awards after the relays was extremely choatic as three young volunteers attempted to organize those who wanted medal cerimonies and those that just wanted their medals and head home.

  12. Ken Stone - October 27, 2013

Larry Barnum, another quarter-mile great, shares a list of WRs set at 1995 Buffalo worlds (which I skipped to compete in my first nationals at Michigan State):

    (M40) Ralph Gisler (Switzerland) 48.10,
    (M45) Frederick Sowerby (USA) 50.72,
    (M50) Steve Robbins (USA) 51.63
    (M60) Ralph Romaine (Trinidad &Tobago) 53.88
    (M65) Earl Fee (Canada) 57.97
    (W45) Mary Libal, (USA) 56.82
    (W50) Margaret Allison, (Australia) 58.51
    (W55) Brunhilde Hoffman, (Germany) 64.50
    (W60) Irene Obera (USA) 67.80.

    Wow! What a list.

  13. Ron Johnson - October 28, 2013

My opologies to Charles Allie. In my previous post I stated a time of 66.31, I meant 56.31. How many golds is it for Charles and Bob Lida now. It should be at least 4 on the world stage. 100,200,400 and 4×100. I don’t know the results of the 4×400 yet. However, if they got on the line with their more than able USA teammates,it’s a done deal.

  14. Jackie Allie - October 29, 2013

Needless to say, I am a very proud wife right now! 🙂

  15. Doug Shaggy Smith - October 29, 2013

I posted tons of Relay shots….caught most of the 4X400 exchanges.
Like David mentioned – it was a glorious day after the downpour and lightning on Saturday

  16. Ken brown - November 5, 2013

Congrats to a very deserving Charles Allie. It was an honor to get to race him three times in Cleveland (using the term race liberally since two of three weren’t too close).
