Henry Rono’s progress toward masters mile record
Henry Rono, the distance legend of the 1970s, has dropped his weight to just under 200 pounds but is still hoping to shed 30 more before going after the M55 world record in the mile this coming spring. He had planned to run a mile time trial yesterday, but rain and cold in his home state of New Mexico prevented him, Henry reports today on a letsrun.com message board. He wrote: “I chicken out because of the rain I said yesterday. The rain over here does freeze you up realy rea!!!ly cold. I will try this weekend for sure if the rain allow me to do it. Let us look forward.â€
Earlier, Henry wrote that his aches and pains were under control:
“No feeling burning fires in the knee joint as I used to. I have changed my world for good feelings of running in the last 128 days.â€
Henry telegraphed his time trial plans about a week ago, writing:
“I’m thinking about this one mile race in Santa Fe this coming weekend. It is harding my head and my stomach. Which it makes my knees weak and nausea in my gut. What should I do? Should stop thinking about it? Or eat alot of food to stop worrying about it.Or go back to drinking alcohol? Any suggestions?â€
Another runner responded:
“Don’t do it…. As a reformed alchoholic, (10 years now, without a drink); don’t even joke about taking a drink; you don’t want thoughts like that in your head; even in jest.
“And don’t go eating alot of food either. To keep losing weight, you still have to ‘under eat’ daily. You have to go to bed ‘feeling hungry’. Even eating ‘normal’ will only keep you where you are now and not let you lose weight. Just keep pushing until you get to your goal weight. Then you can eat ‘normal’ again. Especially since you will be training longer and faster at that point, when you are 160 lbs, for example, than you can now at 185.
“Don’t give up…and don’t give in to the ‘darkside’. I think you were joking, but others might not realize it and ‘do what you say’.
“Keep your eye on the prize. It will be June, 2007 before you know it!….and you want to be 150 lbs and ready to make headlines again. remember…one step at at time, one day at a time, 2 lbs at a time, etc…you WILL get there!â€
Another runner wrote:
“How are you doing today, Henry?
Henry replied:
“After I took a cat nap for one hour. I got up feeling very strong mentally and ready to go again. I’m well recovered. I’m drinking alot of light orange juice now mix with water. I don’t have that headches now. My eyes is back on the ball . . . To get back in shape is not easy. My pains are not in the knees any more as it used to. I drank Prune Juice all day yesterday and it cleaned me up I shake it up and drink the whole bottle and sit in the bathroom all day. I think that is why my stomach and the head start acting up little. I’m Okay now after cat nap.â€
FYI:
My original post on Henry’s goals was back in June.

Henry,
Your heart speaks, listen to it. Nourish your body. You owe it!
The times in track will come as you pursue that goal smartly. The body remembers what it took to run fast. And it took your mind to achieve it.
Much success .

back in 1995, I watched Henry Rono (one time WR holder in the 3K, 5K, 10K and SC) run the M40 800m and 5000m at the Northwest Regional Masters Championships at Gresham, OR. He placed second (2 out of 2) at 2:21.59 in the 800m and second (2 out of 2) at 17:41.40 in the 5000m. But we were all thrilled to see him at a Masters meet.
Good to hear that Henry is going to take another crack at the mile. All the best.
