Hidden in plain sight: Start schedules posted for Grand Rapids

To find the exact starting time of your event at Grand Rapids nationals, don’t go to the Schedule page. Check out the Start Lists. Sneaky, sneaky! Thursday’s track finals include an M65 800 with 18 entrants. Same number in women’s steeple Friday. Those should be interesting. (But it’s a 9-lane track, and they’ll use every lane.) The Combined Events sked for Thursday is missing. But those folks are used to adversity. Saturday field events also missing. (Spotted a typo in M60-69 high jump. I’m pretty sure it’s not really set for “Friday 15-Jul-16 – 1:00 AM.”) See y’all soon.

The bad news is I have to jump at 1 a.m. The good news is that fewer spectators will see my unique sit-on-the-bar flop style.

It is interesting to see that in some age groups they are running combined ages. In the M50 800 is one heat with 16 runners and the M50 1500 is a two heat timed finals with 24 runners.
Also in the M50 is with 3 guest athletes with some of the top seed times. The Canadians will make sure the pace goes fast!

It seems that the Saturday field event link is busted. It send us to the USATF page.

Check out Sunday’s schedule…..everything from the 10,000 to the long hurdles; as well as the 1500 and 200; start at 8:00am. They must be expecting some REALLY fast times 1

  4. Jeff Davison - July 2, 2016

Times for the sprint hurdles have not been posted yet. Wonder if they will be early evening

  5. Jeff Davison - July 2, 2016

All the Sunday running events are currently listed at 8 AM. Hence those will be changed later (not all can be run at 8 of course).

One thing that jumped out at me in the listings for the 400 finals is that the top seed often got lane 1 or 2 rather than the expected middle lane.

For example, the great Antwon Dussett (M40), with a seed time of 49.01, will be in lane 1. LaTrica Dendy (W40), a multiple world champion in her career, will be inside of everyone else (she will be in lane 2).

In W45, Emma McGowan, who swept the sprints in Albuquerque, will be in lane 2 (there will be no one in lane 1).

In another thread, Mike S. figured out the trick for Saturday field events:

…which didn’t work when I clicked on it. How about this:

Detailed schedule not very detailed, all 100m heats listed at same 11 am start time, similar to what was done in New Mexico, not very accurate.

  10. Mike S. - July 3, 2016

Found the last one, switched the word track with pentathlon and it found it. That should be all the start lists.

Mike S.–I think we’re still looking for the sprint hurdles (aka “short hurdles”). See Jeff Davison’s post #3 above. The tentative schedule says Friday, but I don’t see the event in the start lists for Friday’s track events.

  12. Mike S. - July 3, 2016

Sorry I am not sure where they are, I would guess that since there are less then 9 in each age group everyone advanced to the final so there is no need for prelims but then whoever is in charge of meet didn’t seed the final yet so it didn’t show up on the start list. They could solve all this by actually posting the schedule rather than have us try to solve their mysteries.

  13. Kathy Bergen - July 4, 2016

Since when is the Women’s Javelin held on a Friday?

  14. Glenn Irion - July 4, 2016

What is the purpose of making us wait until 2 weeks before the meet to post a schedule if they do not take into account the number of entries in a given event and cram together two LARGE age groups? It’s bad enough that they put us in the predicament of making travel arrangements with little information, but then they gave us 25 competitors in the event anyway. I expected that someone would have noticed that we had 16 in the 60-64 men’s high jump and left it as a single event instead of combining the time slot with the 65-69 age group. We pay a premium to compete in this event. While waiting 2-3 hours to compete in an event costing $15 is acceptable, spending as much as I did for this situation should not be.

I must say that I like that they combined us little youngins with another group.. 🙂

Looking forward to seeing you there, Easter.

There’s no schedule yet, with the website saying that what is offered as a “schedule” is tentative and was last updated on June 10.

I’m leaving Fairfax, Virginia, on July 12 and will head in a northwesterly direction until reaching Allendale, Michigan, the site of the meet. I would like to have a printed-out copy of the schedule to take with me, but that seems out of the question now.

Readers of this blog know, however, that one can piece together a schedule by going to the “start lists,” but that is not as good as having a real schedule, and many of the events are listed as starting at precisely the same time.

My request: If anyone feels like helping me a little bit with my announcing duties at the meet, I would welcome your assistance. No, you don’t have to be on the microphone; just help me a bit with scanning the field looking for jumpers or throwers, or scanning the track trying to figure out who’s in front. I will bring binoculars.

If you’d like to help me a little bit just send me an e-mail at petertaylor2@verizon.net Pay is very low ($0.00 per day), but help would be appreciated.

    PLT

Here is the posted “detailed schedule”:

  18. Roger Vergin - July 6, 2016

Finally a “Detailed Schedule” but still messed up. Sunday’s track schedule has 49 races, 1 race walk, and 6 shuttle relays all starting at 8:00 AM.

  19. Jeff Davison - July 6, 2016

Sprint hurdle times are now posted

  20. Mary Harada - July 6, 2016

not much changes does it – good luck to all – especially those in the 49 races, race walk and shuttle relays at 8 am on Sunday. No shoving please.

Perhaps some folks can make sure Peter has breakfast, lunch, dinner, and plenty of liquids each day – I will not be at the meet or I would try to help out.

  21. Jill R. Vollweiler - July 7, 2016

They left the 45-49 women out of Sunday start list for Event 81 W30-49 1500 Meter Run (9)

  22. bill harvey - July 8, 2016

Glenn Irion pointed out that there were 25 competitors in a combined 60-64 and 65-69 high jump. If you go to the Masters section of USATF Rules of Competition, it clearly states that combined age group flights can be no more than 12 competitors.

  23. Randy Harris - July 11, 2016

I agree with Glenn that this is a bad setup. I also being one of the last to jump am not too happy with the idea that I will get there take some practice jumps, then sit and wait possibly close to two hours before actually jumping.

  24. Roger Vergin - July 11, 2016

A similar high jump situation is scheduled for the next older age groups. Five age groups from 70-74 all the way to 90-94 are combined. There are 23 total competitors in that group.

  25. EM - July 12, 2016

Looks like the Thursday track start list has disappeared, only one race is listed as of Tues afternoon 7/12
