Just to be totally confusing: Christine Kennedy is top USATF master

Last Friday, while I was snoozing, USATF named W55 roadie Christine Kennedy as USATF Masters Athlete of the Year. Wait, didn’t we just hear that Nolan Shaheed, Johnnye Valien and Flo Meiler won the top awards? Yes, but the powers-that-be (masters track chair Gary Snyder, masters LDR chair Don Lein and maybe others) apparently got together to pick the top over-35 athlete in USA Track and Field, and it was the asphalt huggers’ turn for the honor. So we’ll probably get the tiptop award again in 2012. Just the way things go. Congrats, Christine!

Christine won the 5K and marathon at worlds, but she's best on the roads.

Meanwhile, the USATF Masters T&F Awards Committee has announced another honor:

Mary Trotto won this year’s 2011 David Pain Award for outstanding service to Masters Track and Field. Mary works relentlessly as Chair of the Active Athletes Committee, Chair of the Awards Committee, and member of the MTF Executive Committee.

As Awards Chair, she works tirelessly, communicating awards criteria for both the overall and the age group. She compiled and disseminated all the performance information on all the candidate athletes before and at each stage of the voting.

As Active Athletes Chair, she constantly informs the athletes of all matters relating to world, national, and regional championships and ongoing issues relating to masters. She also developed the charts for the press releases at this year’s national and world championships on Olympians, world champions, and potential stars, so the press would have interest, a huge help to the Media Committee.

At the meets themselves, Mary monitors meet facilities for safety to the athletes and made changes on-site at Sacramento Worlds. She is a selfless contributor who enjoys competing and gives back to MTF in service

That’s great news about Mary. It’s about time Mary was recognized for all her hard work. This honor deserves a separate web post, Ken, so that all the people Mary has helped over the years can express their appreciation.
