Several sources are reporting here (in the comments) and on letsrun.com that Kathy Martin’s reported loss to a Jean Vernon was a clerical error. My original report mistakenly referred to an impostor. My deepest apologies for jumping the gun. But had the race been on the track,
Kathy Martin would have smashed her own W60 world record in the mile Sunday in New York. But her 5:39 — equivalent to a 3:58 open mile — came at the
5th Avenue Mile.
(See results here.) Even more incredible: She was reported beaten in her age group by 61-year-old
Jean Vernon of Brooklyn, who had a net time of 5:33, age-graded at 104.5 percent. [
But maybe not. A man is wearing Jean’s bib number, I learned after photos were posted.] The listed track mile record is Kathy’s 5:42.65 from 2013. Among the men, the best masters-age mark was M40
Bernard Lagat’s 4:00 in the elite race, where he took 12th. (Also notable were 40-year-old
Meb Keflezighi, the Boston Marathon winner who jogged the course in 4:58, and
Sean Wade, 49, who won his age group in 4:25.) The oldest man running Sunday was 96-year-old
William Benson (21:43 net time) and the oldest woman was 85-year-old
Joan Fisher (15:32). Again this year, M50 best-selling author
Malcolm Gladwell ran well, clocking a 5:03 at age 52. Congrats to all who motored down the Museum Mile.
Kathy beat Jean in the age-graded race, but lost by 6 seconds on the road.
Only hours after I posted the Jean-beats-Kathy note, Tom Hinz in a comment below noted that a man was wearing Jean’s bib number. Indeed, that’s the case.

Originally, I did a quick search for “Jean Vernon” and masters runner and didn’t see much. So I thought it odd that she’d explode with a 5:33 from nowhere. Now we have a reason. But what is the gent’s? Who IS he?

In case you didn’t know, Kathy Martin ran in the Georgia USATF Great Labor Day Mile last Monday with a time of 5:38.18. She was third in the masters race behind Sonja Friend-Uhl 4:52.76 and Lesley Chaplin 5:36.83.

You might want to research the winner in the NYRR 5th avenue mile in the W60 group. When I pulled up the photo of Jean Vernon, the winner, it was a male wearing the bib number 10207 which is the bib number of the supposed female runner who beat Kathy Martin. Curious!

letsrun comment noted that “Mr. Vernon” is well-documented on athlinks.com — but nowhere near being a 5:33 miler. In fact, “he” has run 5th Avenue Mile for many years and struggled to break 7 minutes:

The male runner is Benigno Veraz of VCTC and a friend of mine and many others. He was desperate to break 5.30 but only managed a 5.33. He should have come third in his 60+ ager group but was robbed becuase his details were swapped somehow with Jean who actual;ly must have run 7.12 which was the time given to Beni. He was distraught and did not know why his 5.33 showed as 7.12.
We and a NYRR official checked his bib and it has his name and the correct B-tag.
It must simply be an computer input error.
NYRR spokesman writes: “Thank you for reaching out to New York Road Runners. We are looking into this and will get back to you as soon as possible. Please let me know if you have any further questions.”
good to see a photo of Bill Benson – 96 and still up and at it. I miss seeing him at track meets.

Hope I can shed some light on this. Beni Veraz is a runner in our club, Van Cortlandt Track Club, VCTC. He ran a 5:33, good for 4th place in the men’s 60 + race which was run together with the women.
It appears that Veraz and Vernon, very close alphabetically, were simply issued the wrong numbers, 10206 and 10207 by someone at NYRR. We were stunned to see his official time come up as 7:12 which is more in line with Ms. Vernon’s previous times.
The gentleman pictured, and listed as Jean Vernon was not trying to pull a fast one. Apparently there was a clerical error. He was legitimately registered and wants his time credited to his name, rather than the 7:xx that was originally listed for him (and was presumably her time).
NYRR mixed up the bib numbers by giving the man her number. Neither runner would have known until later. Unfair to call him “an imposter”
Mary, I got this reply from NYRR rep:
“Thank you for your patience. After checking in with our results team, they were already aware of the situation and Jean Vernon’s name has since been removed from the results.”
I shot the rep a series of questions. Awaiting answers but don’t expect any. NYRR is embarrassed.

He should have come third in his 60+ ager group but was robbed becuase his details were swapped somehow with Jean who actual;ly must have run 7.12 which was the time given to Beni. He was distraught and did not know why his 5.33 showed as 7.12.
We and a NYRR official checked his bib and it has his name and the correct B-tag.
It must simply be an computer input error
