Keith Bateman makes it a sweep! WRs from mile through 10,000

Last August, Aussie Keith Bateman called his shot. He came to the plate and pointed toward five world records in the M55 distances—1500, mile, 3000, 5000 and 10K. Nonsense, huh? Look again, sports fans. He made it 4-for-5 Saturday by lowering the outdoor record for 10,000 to an incredible 31:51.86— better than a half-minute faster than the previous listed record of 32:27.7 by Britain’s Michael Hager. He did it at the New South Wales Open Track and Field Championships at Sydney Olympic Park. Here’s Keith in his 3K record:

His friend Simon Butler-White writes: “Keith broke the 3000m WR in November, the mile WR in December and the 5000m WR in January. We were all rather worried when he didn’t break any world records in February, but he’s come good in March. Keith is easily the most outstanding candidate for the Australian Masters Athletics Athlete of the Year award for 2011. The winners of the annual awards will be named at the conclusion of this year’s Nationals in Brisbane from April 21-24.”

And here’s the crazy context: 31:51 corresponds to an open (age 20-30) time of 26:45. The real-life WR for 10K is 26:17.53.

Now comes the logical question: Who will be IAAF Masters Athlete of the Year at the end of 2011? Bill Collins, coach Bateman or some still-to-be-discovered star at Sacramento worlds?

But don’t bet your house on Keith. If he doesn’t enter Sacto, he won’t be considered. That’s the way of WMA.

He’s merely the Henry Rono of masters track.

Simon also says:

Other noteworthy masters performances were posted by Stuart Gyngell, the world’s No 1 M45 shotputter, who finished second with a best throw of 17.27; and Lahti 2009 1500m gold medalist Don Mathewson (M65), whose 38:22.60 in the 10,000m is one of the fastest times in the world in 2010/11.

I don’t think Rono ever held the 1500 WR? To be able to train in a manner where you could set records ranging from the 1500 – 10,000 is outstanding. Sure hope he makes it to Sacramento and goes head-to-head with Rich Burns and other outstanding runners.

Correct, no 1500 record for Rono. A more apt comparison would be to Paavo Nurmi, the Flying Finn:

Which prompts this thought: Keith needs a nickname!

    Awesome Aussie?

    What do y’all suggest?

Congrats to Keith! What an amazing string of races he’s put together!! As a middle-distance/distance runner myself, I know how hard it is to stay healthy and fit longer than a few weeks. To keep performing at this level for this many months … well, I’m stunned. To say the least. Boy, the distance records just keep getting faster and faster!

Amazing sweep by Keith. Would be very interesting to see him in person to get a real feel for what a terrific athlete he is.

And Pete Magill, you’re quite a star yourself. Once you join M50 that group will really be loaded, with Anselm LeBourne and so many other stalwarts to contend with. Speaking of Anselm, I was sorry to see that both the 1500 indoor mark he established late last year (4:13.56) and the 800 he ran in January (1:59.94) failed to gain designation as pending M50 American marks (www.usatf.org).

But back to Keith, he is indeed awesome; versatility is an admirable trait in any athlete. Hope he comes to America some day.

Thanks for the kind words all – putting my head on the block again … Have just wrangled my way into a quality 1500m race on Saturday (qualifying time 4:00) – I am going to get obliterated but will certainly have people to chase! Could be a great race or a disaster!

  6. Ken Stone - March 28, 2011

Listed WR for the M55 1500 is 4:12.5 by Kiwi Ron Robertson in 1997. So Keith needs to race as well as chase to go low 4s. Best of luck, mate!

    Incredibly Inspiring!!

  8. Keith Bateman - April 7, 2011

Actually I did get obliterated and I started far far too fast 400m = 62sec – finished in 4:15.48 – another race in the State masters tomorrow …

Thanks for the month’s workout schedule. I see now why you hold so many world records. Astounding. Thanks again, and good luck in 2013.
