Mike Janusey claims M55 pentathlon record at Raleigh regionals

Fifteen years after setting an M40 U.S. record and nearly 10 years after scoring the M45 American best in the pentathlon, Mike Janusey of Venetia, Pennsylvania, notched another AR in the outdoor event. Mike’s score of 3721 points at the USATF Southeastern Masters Regionals topped the listed M55 record of 3687 by Roger Kroodsma at Eugene nationals in 2000. Mike’s marks included a 200 in 26.76, 1500 in 5:58.85, long jump of 5.19 meters (17-0 1.2), discus of 37.60 (123-4) and javelin of 53.56 (175-9). (See other results here.) The meet at North Carolina State University in Raleigh was in mid-May, but I wasn’t aware of the record until today, thanks to a gracious note from Jamie Wells. Belated congrats to Mike!

Wonderful performance by Mike. A good guy, a fine athlete, and very much deserving. I hope Kay Glynn will comment on what Mike has been through in the orthopedic department.

Of course, there were other records set at this meet. Charles Allie, at age 65, established a world mark in the 400 dash with 56.09. Our friend Myrle Mensey from St. Louis broke several records, but I must admit getting confused as to which ones were actually better than earlier marks not yet ratified that Myrle had achieved.*

    * I was fortunate enough to be the announcer for this fine meet.

Yes, Peter, Mike has been busy, and I was pleasantly surprised to read the article on June 24 stating that Mike had won his division of the decathlon in Charlotte, NC. With a score of 6982, he did some working to earn the title. And all this happens after he’s had a hip revision on each hip! Don’t underestimate the power of modern science AND a willful attitude towards staying healthy, having fun and not giving up when it’s time for rehab! Keep it going, Mike!
