Nolan Shaheed escapes from N.Y. — with another great mile

Nolan Shaheed’s season is ending the way it began — in New York state with a great mile performance. In January, when he was 64, he ran 5:03.07 at the Hartshorne indoor mile. On Saturday, at 65, he clocked 5:07 to win his age group in the Fifth Avenue Mile. Nolan graciously wrote me from home in Pasadena, saying: “Just got back from winning the George Sheehan mile division. … 64-year-old Ronville Gravesande was second in 5:17 and 68-year-old Noel Haynes was third in 5:26. Thomas Hartshorne, Tony Plaster and Harry Nolan were among the top runners of that race and there were quite a few masters in the 40s and 50s races. In the elite women’s race, a 40-year-old Canadian ran 4:40!!! She came in last and no one paid attention to her but she actually ran the best race of the nearly 6,000 runners who competed.” That’s Nolan for you — sharing the glory. (It was Diane Cummins who took 18th in 4:40.2, BTW.) Nolan added: “My greatest thrill was meeting Mary Cain and taking a picture with her after the race. She is an outstanding athlete and I am a big fan of hers. .. . It was a fantastic experience.”

Another amazing and inspiring performance. Heard someone is taking a crack at the M60 800 WR Tuesday 9/16. Nolan has set a very tough mark though.

Congratulation Nolan. I don’t know how you do it, but you do it! I know that were some other very good masters track runners in the race too. Congrats to you all and way to represent.

Congrats Nolan! What a super race. I can’t wait to see all the M65 records tumble this year

Nolan, I believe you should go to the Hartshorne Mile in Ithaca, NY, this January and run about 5:08 or so. Why? As you know so well, the world indoor record for M65 in the mile is 5:11.43 by Frank Condon, who no longer competes in our meets.

I do believe that a 5:08 or even a 5:07 would be possible indoors for someone like you. For others of your age, no. I assume you are really 65, but why do you run like a young guy?

Way to go Nolan and Noel and Ronville-that’s a one two three finish at the most prestigious road mile in the country. We didn’t get any credit for the club however. I noticed that Central Park has their athletes identified as such in the results-but no SoCal Track Club affiliation next to our athletes names. You guys are going to break the WR in the 4 x 800 next year for sure. Congrats everybody !

Relax, Mark. The only clubs listed are in the greater NY area. The address of club members means something in this club competition. Here’s a cut and paste from the NYRR website:

Running clubs in the New York City metro area welcome runners of all ages and abilities. Each of the approximately 100 clubs has its own unique history, purpose, membership profile, and goals. Please contact individual clubs about membership. New York Road Runners is proud to serve as an umbrella organization for local clubs, providing weekly races, an annual team-points series in two open and three masters categories for both men and women, and monthly Club Council meetings. Although NYRR membership is not required to join a local running club, many clubs encourage it.

Hello Mark Cleary, I take it by your comment that Ron Gravesende now is a member of So Cal?
