Nolan Shaheed joins the kiddies in Sports Illustrated’s latest FITC

Nolan Shaheed gets his 15 seconds of fame in the current (March 29) issue of Sports Illustrated. See “Faces in the Crowd” on page 18. The SI folks wrote to USATF, seeking a portrait, and they used the big smile I shot at 2008 Spokane nationals. Cool! Nolan was celebrated not for his latest mile and 1500 records but for his medals at Kamloops. You can tell SI looked at the meet results because they refer to him “running the third leg of the winning 4×200 relay in the men’s 60-99 division.” Of course, there’s no such thing as a 60-99 age group. But the Kamloops results site listed a bunch of relays with this -99 glitch. Oh well. It’s all good. Congrats, Nolan! Do us proud in Boston.

Nolan is having a great M60 debut season, and it can only get better.

At Boston, Nolan is entered in the 400, 800, 1 mile, and 3000. Will he try to win all four? Interestingly, this meet looks like it will rank no. 3 all-time in attendance for our indoor masters (Landover 2009 is ranked no. 1), and it has an absolute embarrassment of riches (stars), but it has received very little attention to this point. It starts in less than 48 hours.

Maybe there will be a separate posting to discuss the meet and what the entrants hope will happen both in their events and in the meet as a whole.

Nolan is my hero. Only the great Shaheed could attempt to win all four events… and set a couple records in the process!

    Nolan,
You really are incredible. Even though you were not 100% at Kamloops you ran spectacularly well. I was the anchor leg at Kamloops ( they dropped me down from the 65 yr. old relay) and it bears mentioning that Nolan took the baton at least 20m behind the German team and only made up the entire distance and then some!!!! We screwed up our pass a bit ( typical USA pass!!!) but won by 20m anyway….what a pleasure competing on a team with Nolan and his wonderful attitude and of course his fantastic smile.
Nolan you deserve more than anyone I know to be in Sports Illustrated…Love ya man.
