Pete Magill reclaims title of King of the 5K with American record
Pete Magill’s specialty is the 5000 meters. His cross country, road and track titles at that distance are many. On Sunday, he added another gem to the crown: M50 American outdoor record. It was the third lowering of the age-group record this season, following efforts by Ken Ernst and Mike Blackmore. (Is this a modern version of Bannister, Santee and Landy or what?) Running against the kiddies at Oxy (Occidental College in Los Angeles), Pete clocked 15:11.13. That beats the Blackmore mark by more than 5 seconds. (See results here.) BTW, Pete likes Oxy. A year ago, he ran 14:45 there. (See my interview.) Now the question arises: When will all these guys race each other? What an explosion of 5K talent!

Pete is a STUD. I talked to him not an hour before the race and he said he felt very bad and would not be running, but you can’t keep a good man down. 30 minutes later he decided to try warming up and the rest (as they say) is history.
Congratulations Pete.
Nolan – I had to loosen the laces on my running shoes just to get them on, ’cause my feet were so swollen. But after jogging for 20 minutes, everything started to feel better, and then I knew I had to race (no excuses left!). Still, it was really painful from the get-go. The good news is the next one has gotta feel better!!!
Congratulations Pete!
Congratulations Pete! Fabulous!! What’s going to happen when your feet aren’t swollen?
Kids, when Pete’s feet aren’t swollen, he’ll be swell. I know that was bad but I just had to do it. Another beautiful race, Pete. Congratulations. Smartty
Congratulations Pete.
C’mon Pete – I expected at least a 20 second improvement in Mike’s time. What are you really up to? Small precision chunks out of the Record books like the great Segei Bubka and the Pole Vault many moons ago??
Let’s ice the feet and get the swelling down and get on with it.
Oh – well done.
Cheers
Great job Pete
Well done Pete!
Matt
as expected… excellent job and left another bite for next time…
Nice work Pete. What’s the deal with your feet?
KP – Don’t you mean, “What’s the deal with OUR feet?!” Dang these 50-year-old feet of ours!!!
Props out to Brian Pilcher, who did a little bit of record-setting himself this week, with a 41:09 12K at Bloomsday. Nice work!!!
Just don’t tell me it was the shoes. Actually it musta been da shoes 🙂 Another AR. Oh and BTW your feet are now 100 years old.
