Relays spiked — two few entries on short notice

Rich Perelman, who helped do media for the 1984 L.A. Games, wasn’t quite up to the Olympian task of launching a relays-only meet March 30-31 at the Home Depot Center near Los Angeles. In an email sent today, Rich writes: “It is with great sadness that due to a paucity of entries, Just Relays cannot be held in 2007. Although we worked diligently to create a meet which would give athletes of all ages a chance to compete on one of the world’s fastest tracks, at The Home Depot Center in Carson, the total of received and promised entries -– in all divisions -– did not reach 80. This is insufficient to put on a meet of any quality and we will not offer a sorry excuse for what should be a fun and exciting event.”

Rich’s note continued:

Our interest in creating a quality meet is not dimmed by our disappointment (and financial loss) and we hope to be able to have those who did register help us to make Just Relays a reality in 2008.
Those who did register and paid fees will receive full refunds. To all those who wanted to compete and those who were ready to assist, you have my thanks.

I’m not sure how many masters quartets entered the meet. But with the Texas-Arlington meet and Penn Relays coming up and Boston just concluded, it’s unlikely the Carson event drew many geezer age-groupers.

Maybe next time don’t make it “just relays” and pick a less busy date, and maybe someone will want to go.

Rich Perelman replied to an email query about the masters portion of Just Relays and next year’s date for the event.
