Ruth Frith poised to make masters history in Sydney WMG
Prediction: Ruth Frith will kick arse in Sydney. And she’ll get even more attention at the World Masters Games than 101-year-old Alfred Proksch got in Lahti. Ruth speaks Strine (understandable to many in the English-speaking world), and she has a sharp tongue. But beyond the records she’ll certainly set in the throws, she’ll be a […]

Who should IAAF honor as Best Masters Athletes of 2009?
Although the form specifies a deadline of September 13, the Eurovets site says August 25 is the final date for the various regions of World Masters Athletics to submit nominations for “IAAF Best Masters” of 2009 — a man and a woman. WMA Secretary Winston Thomas tells the Eurovets site that regions have to submit […]

M100 Alfred Proksch, other supervets in Lahti photo gallery
Besides our respect, athletes over 90 also deserve masters awe. And all the attention we can muster. So check out this gallery, the latest in a series I’m rolling out. Alfred Proksch, a 1936 Olympian and 101-year-old thrower, attracted the most press. Documentary filmmaker Jan Tenhaven was all over him with his 11-member crew and […]

Eurovets set 20 world records at Lahti WMA championships
In 2007, Europeans set 17 world age-group records at Riccione worlds — with an attendance of about 9,000 athletes. At the 2009 Lahti world masters meet, with about 5,000 entrants, Europeans set 20 world records, according to a report from Eurovets statmeister Ivar Söderlind of Sweden. Quality AND quantity. Ivar writes: “It is remarkable that […]

More highlights of Ontario masters meet: Canadian records
Complete results from the Ontario masters indoor championships haven’t been posted, but Doug Smith put up a stunning series of images. Most show new Canadian record holders, including my fave Karla Del Grande (only a little older than me but two seconds faster in the 200. Sigh.) Karla ran 8.54 to break Carol Lafayette-Boyd’s W55 […]

Late report: W80 quartet smashes 4×1 world record in BC
The hardest record in masters track? That’s easy. The M100 4Ă—400. First you have to find four centenarians to run. . . . Of course, we don’t have a record in this age group. But it helps one appreciate a 4Ă—1 world record set last month at the British Columbia Senior Games — a rare […]

She’s been a busy bee of late, since the USATF masters records pages also have been updated (as of today). Among the records noted as (p) for pending: John Altendorf’s 4.00 M60 vault Sunday at Eugene. (And […]

Record-setting frenzy at National Senior Olympics
The meet ain’t even half done and already a bunch of world and American age-group records have fallen at the National Senior Olympics at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. Yesterday, for starters, Bobby Whilden of Texas knocked a hallowed Payton Jordan world record off the books. Bobby, 70, clocked a stunning 12.76 for the 100 […]

Boise results filter out through unofficial channels
Just back from a two-day family trip to Disneyland. Just finished reviewing results from Boise (appended below). Very pleased to see how USATF’s Melvin Jackson summarized the records set at masters nationals. Very disgusted that the official Web site for results still has none — at 10:10 p.m. Sunday, many hours after completion of the […]
