Tahoe masters meet sees sizzling hurdle races and hot 100s

Carmel Papworth-Barnum of WomenRunningTogether.com shares some tidbits from Tahoe, where the USATF Pacific Association held its masters championships yesterday. Complete results eventually will show up here. Among other highlights, Joy Upshaw Margerum won the 80-meter hurdles in 12.20 from W45 rival Liz Palmer in 12.22. “Great race,” says Carmel. “Liz got out early and Joy just got her at the end. In the 100, Liz turned the tables and won 12.88 to Joy’s 13.18. Liz has been training real hard and looks hard and fast!” In the 100 hurdles, B.J. Duhon clocked an impressive 14.29. The legendary M50 world record is 13.57 by Walt Butler in 1991.

From left: Karen Maxwell, Joy and Liz after the 80-meter hurdles.

Liz turns 50 in August 2010, and Joy joins her in W50 the following February. So look for some attacks on the W50 world record at Sacramento worlds. The listed 80-meter hurdle WR is 12.08 by Swiss champ Christine Mueller.

Among the men’s 100 winners were M50 Marty Krulee in 12.28, M40 Rod Jett in 11.54 (doubling back from Sacramento the previous day), M55 John McNamee in 12.61 and M65 Stephen Robbins in 12.57. Steve also won the 2 in 25.91, according to mastersrankings.com. Carmel’s husband, M65 champion Larry Barnum, won his 400 in 60.94 — his first race since October.

Steve Robbins had flown to the Left Coast from Cleveland, where he lives. He had been hoping to lower his own world age-group record in the 100 of 12.37 from 2008 (as telegraphed by this article). But a hamstring problem several weeks old kept him from challenging his time.

As meet director of the 2nd Lake Tahoe Master T&F meet I would like to thank each athlete for traveling and supporting our meet.

Having world record attempts in the sprint and throws proved to me that Tahoe is a great venue distination and our success in 2010 motivates me to add more meets in our future.

Track & Field is back in South Lake Tahoe and ADSportsTahoe.com is your starting line for more information.

Thank again for all the support.

Ken, Thanks for the nice coverage. Another name to be reckoned with(in more ways than one)is Joerg Herbrechtsmeier, an M54 who ran the 800m in even splits, at Lake Tahoe’s altitude, pretty much on his own, in 2:16.04.

Question for PT: How are the entries looking at this point compared to Oshkosh, Spokane, etc.?

Hard to believe the early deadline is only 3 1/2 weeks out and the final deadline just over a month away.

Just submitted my entry so I’m in for yet another year of suffering in the ‘chase!

Mellow Johnny, you do know how to go off the topic but still ask something important, don’t you? Because you mentioned me, I have to respond.

First, however, I will give two shouts out to Liz Palmer and Joy Margerum. Terrific sprinters and hurdlers, and I expect to see them do well in Sacramento.

Relative to your question, Mellow Johnny, we are easily ahead of where we were last year at this point for Oshkosh. Versus Spokane (2008) we are doing even better. And yet, overall the entries for Sacramento are by no means spectactular.

The standard I hope to meet (Charlotte, 2006) was well ahead of where we are now at this time point. That meet had 1367 entrants, and for the first time, Mellow Johnny, I am beginning to lose some confidence. I thought that Sacramento was a cinch for 1400, but I am now beginning to waver.

One area with a strong turnout to this point is the 5000 racewalk. As you know so well, Mellow Johnny, the more racewalkers the later you run your steeplechase.

Just ask any number of people (my wife, students, friends) and they’ll all confirm I can get off-topic very easily.

I would hope Sacto would be a shoe-in for 1400+ with the top-notch facility and the fact it’s hosting World’s next year.

I asked the Sacramento Sports Commission about the time steeplers would run. They were very helpful, responded right away and told me 11:30 or so right now. I can live with that a lot better than 2!

What about Ed Burke’s World Record in the hammer? You almost forgot it like they almost forgot the Hammer event!

  7. Hurdle fan - May 31, 2010

If this is a preview of the national meet, it will be a real treat to watch the hurdle races in Sacramento. The track will be smoking!!

  8. PA Thrower - May 31, 2010

This was a spectacular meet. Well run with views unmatched. Big thanks to Anthony!!!!
Being a throwing member of this association has been a challenge for 3 years. Somehow the hammer, javelin and weight throw are an after thought if they are thought of at all. Every year the PA announces the meet and excludes these events. The throwers then rally to be included and heard. The “king” of masters hammer belongs to the Nor Cal Throwers (throwing arm of Golden West Athletic Club) and this is our association championships. Ed Burke (70) broke his own world record at the meet and decided not to surrender his only hammer to attempt a further throw.
Imagine if they left out hurdles, high jump or the 100.
I’m guessing there were 30 throwers at this meet that once again felt like second class citizens on the track.
The last minute accommodation at a 2nd high school 15 minutes away for the hammer, jav and weight were woefully inadequate but the attempt was appreciated.
Once again the grass runway for the javelin has become the norm for this association. Again imagine showing up for a meet to high jump, long jump or run a 5K on grass.
As always the fellowship of throwers was priceless!!! And to all my running and jumping friends it is always a blast to watch your incredible performances and visit with you.

Great job, everyone! Some SUPER times and marks today. Full results are now posted, but it’s a shame that the turnout was so poor. Suggestions as to how the PA can generate a bigger turnout for its championship master’s meet?

  10. Ken Stone - May 31, 2010

    Results are up at:
    http://www.adsportstahoe.com/2010_Lake_Tahoe_Masters_Track.htm

And yes, Ed Burke has a hammer mark of 59.04 meters (193-8), which exceeds his own M70 WR of 57.59 (188-11) at Mt. SAC!

    Great work, Ed!

  11. Liz Palmer - May 31, 2010

I know that Tahoe is a bit of a drive for some, but please make the effort to attend this meet next year. The views are stunning, we’ve had perfect conditions two years in a row, meet volunteers and officials are friendly and accomodating, and there was a delicious BBQ lunch onsite. I hope the PA can better accomodate all of the throwing events in future years. I know the altitude makes distance running a challenge, but imagine the “lung conditioning” you’ll get to assist you at sea level!
Thanks to our meet director and PA masters chair (Anthony and Joy) for putting this meet together.

  12. Throwers? We don't need no stinkin' throwers! - May 31, 2010

PA thrower, Get used to it.

  13. Mellow Johnny - June 1, 2010

Sounds like a great meet. Would put it on the calendar for next year but alas, no steeple 🙁

Timing is great (3 weeks before the Oregon Assn Champs), location is great, and I have an aunt who lives down there so would be a great place to spend Memorial Day weekend.

But needs to offer the full range of events that nationals has. Obviously, that’s tough if your facility doesn’t have the water pit or barriers.

And in response to hurdle fan’s comment “The track will be smoking!!” let’s hope that’s from the runners only 😉

  14. peter taylor - June 1, 2010

Mellow Johnny, do you remember George Young? A great steeplechaser, but he could do other events as well. Do you think you could get down to 2:02 in the 800? If you could, you might want to try that event as a supplement to your ‘chasing.

On more immediate matters, we have a big meet coming up next month in California, our nationals. This year I have been using the 100 dash as a proxy for the size of the meet, because counting all the entrants is too time-consuming. So far we have 23 entrants in the 100. In 2006, Charlotte, which had 1367 entrants overall, had 307 entries in the 100, not counting Canadians, etc.

It looks like we will need quite a burst to reach 308 entries in the 100. If we do that I am quite sure we will pass Charlotte’s overall total. If you see any Oregonians who look like they might be the right age, please tell them to enter.

    “To the LADIES of track!!”

  16. Mellow Johnny - June 1, 2010

Hey PT- I do remember George Young. Great all-around runner which, unfortunately, I am not. I’d be lucky to get down around 2:12 to be honest. Have never had much speed but am a decent athlete so the steeple works for me while other events don’t.

I know of several friends (distance runners) who will be competing at nat’ls for the first time from Oregon. That won’t change your “proxy” numbers but there is a decent-sized Oregon contingent. The location along with it being at a top-notch facility (we are snobs that way being able to compete at Hayward Field periodically) is a big draw.

  17. Matt B. - June 1, 2010

Tahoe track does have a steeple pit, I’ve seen it. Boy a steeple at altitude now that is punishment. Although I guess they could have offered a 2K steeple event. When will the time schedule be posted for Nationals? It would be great to have more races in the evening 8 or 9PM. The USCAA national corporate relays are being held the same weekend: http://www.uscaa.org in San Ramon, CA I am a team captain.

  18. Mellow Johnny - June 1, 2010

Us steeplers are pretty used to punishment so what’s one more thing to add to the mix? 🙂 Thankfully, I live at elevation somewhat.

Seems to me that State and Regional Championship events should have all the events that the National Championships do whenever possible.

  19. Matt B. - June 1, 2010

or maybe just charge and extra $1.00 to the steeplers entry for the cost of the water. I wonder how many gallons it holds?

  20. Matthew - June 1, 2010

Factors that may have affected turnout for this meet:

The PA Masters meet this year was incorrectly listed as scheduled for May 29th on the PAUSATF.org page for quite awhile.

There was no schedule of events for this meet until shortly before the meet. When I e-mailed the contact person asking about a schedule weeks ago, I got no response.

For me, it is a long drive (3.5 hours) and I’d rather not get up that early or splurge for a motel. Looks like a great location. Maybe next year.

  21. Randy Wilson - June 1, 2010

    To all my throwing friends….
Nor Cal Throwers will soon be making a formal announcement of a throws only meet in Martinez Ca on 6/19 to start between 10-12 (still working on start time). We will throw the weight throw, hammer, javelin, shot and discus. This should be a USATF sanctioned event. Spread the word. Have everyone wishing to get on email list contact randy@norcalthrowers.org

  22. Terry Parks - June 2, 2010

I had a great time at the meet. I found that the meet director was very accommodating to the athletes (they had 2 heats of the race walk because some people had to leave early) and the post race party was a blast. I should had thought twice about doing the 400/800 double since there was practically no rest between the two events and because of the altitude, but it was still fun.

I will definitely be back next year.
