Thickness of discus? USATF officials note rule change
This just in — from the USATF National Officials’ mailing list: “Correction for the 1.5 KG Discus for Masters 50-59 Age Groups: The correct thickness is 38 to 40 mm starting immediately. It was just pointed out to George Kleeman, NOC Chair, Rules, that we had missed the change in the thickness dimensions for the 1.5kg discus when WMA adopted the IAAF specifications around 2003. Note the correct dimensions, which will get changed in the 2008 USATF book and should be used immediately, are 38 to 40 mm rather than 37 to 39 mm which was the specification in 2001.”
The message continued:
Note the Trackmaster gauges, at least Rev. 2, are incorrectly labeled for 37 and 42 mm for this discus. It does have a 40 mm thickness for the 1.6 KG discus which can be use for the max. measurement but you will need to use calipers to measure the minimum of 38 mm.”
The correct dimensions are those in IAAF and WMA rules since USATF merely adopts the WMA standards when passed. If some of you have other revisions of the discus gauge or the Gill gauge let George know how they are marked, email: george_kleeman@comcast.net.
Wow.
I knew they measured weights, but not thickness of implements.
Has anyone’s discus been rejected — or a record invalidated — because of this glitch?

My favorite discus did not pass at North Carolina because they said it was too thick (barely). Perhaps they were wrong. I had to use a discus with no mojo.
I have only 6 more months in the 55-59 year old age group and don’t want to buy any more 1.5 kg disks. Good ones cost $250, and I’m saving for a bag full of 1 kg disks.
