Tony Young runs 4:13 mile indoors at 46! Record to be nixed

Tony Young, still trying to be the fastest miler in his household, clocked an ungodly 4:13.25 this morning at a University of Washington indoor meet to beat the listed WMA indoor mile world record of 4:21.90  by Albin Swenson  in 1993 and his own outdoor world record of 4:16.09  he set last year in Gresham, Oregon. Of course, it won’t go into the record books. It came on an “oversized” track of 307 meters, instead of the maximum 200 meters per lap. We learn from Runnerspace.com, which posted this video interview by Kevin Ullman: “Just after 11 a.m., Tony Young and his almost 47 years of life experience dragged a chase pack back into contention with the leaders in the second heat of the men’s mile.”

Kevin continued:

Over the final 300 meters, the youthful exuberance of some left the
Masters master feeling his age a bit, but Young stayed mid-pack to run
a 4:13.25 to take down his previous 45-49 age group world record. . .
.  He stopped by after his race to talk about resetting his world
record. He said, “All I am trying to do is lower my times for my son.”

Tony, who said he had a 62-second quarter this morning, also noted Jim Sorensen’s recent 4:17 mile at Hartshorne. Very classy.

Masters sprinters also competed, according to this heat sheet. Haven’t seen results yet.

We also learn from Doug Smith of Ontario:

M45 Alain Boucher from Kanata, broke the CAN Indoor Mile record with a 4:31.39 at the Hartshorne Memorial Masters Mile at Cornell U. in Ithaca NY. The 4:32.19 record was held by Roly McSorley NB set in 1997.

Alain also ran the 800m faster than the CAN record on Jan 17th. Alain ran 2:01.11. The CAN record is 2:03.19. The trouble is that Alain ran on the fabulous Indoor track in Ottawa – that’s a 400m oval. Indoor records have to be set on a 200m oval.

As reported on the NEWS page http://www.ontariomasters.ca/news_detail.php?nid=91
M45’s Paul Osland and Mike Sherar both went under the CAN record at Mini Meet #2 on Sunday. Mike set the new record of 2:01.27. Too bad Alain didn’t come down for that meet – would have been a great race!

We had the debate last year about whether a mark set in Ottawa would be considered for an OUTDOOR record. (the CAN record is 1:59.41)

Also amazing at this meet was Jana Gedde (W50) cranking out an amazing 8.22 60m dash in only her eighth month of her track comeback.

Notice how he smoothly works his way up from last to sixth at one point.
    Incredible effort.

Tony, Please Please get on a regulation 200m track so we won’t be talking about the records that could have or should have been. We already went down that road when you were in the 40-44 group. I’m your friend-but sometimes I think when it comes to records ( Indoor) you are your own worst enemy–Best of luck but please do it on a track that counts for a record sometime soon.

  6. Mary Woo - February 1, 2009

I’d like to think Tony is like many masters still pounding the boards- doing it simply for the love of running and for pushing their own personal limits as opposed to the “glory” of offical records. Having said that, I’d LOVE to see Tony get his well-deserved place in the record books. Whatever- I have a feeling he’s just fine within his own skin.

    Hi Ken-
I would love to hear some follow-up on George’s performance. I have no doubt that the young ‘uns took note of him and his throws regardless of weight!

I was able to see Tony (FOREVER) Young’s Mile run on Saturday (January 30) at the UW Dempsey. Just to note that Demsey is a flat 307m carpet like track (no boads), which makes it only 93 meters short of a full outdoor 400m track, and over twice as large as the Millrose Games track in New York (which one source lists as 150m).
None-the-less, I watched Tony’s performance and it was awe-inspiring! Two sections of a mixed masters 60 meter dash were also run. Jana Gedde ran a very speedy 60m for W50, which age grades to 97.38 %.

Speaking of the Millrose Games, NBC did its usual screw the athletes and the viewers on Saturday morning. Out of an “hour” TV presentation I clocked just over 16 minutes of actual competition, and I was generous as I let the stopwatch run through all the men’s shot put and women’s pole vault. Apparently there was some spectacular men’s pole vaulting that was never shown. When it comes to March Madness, the TV networks are capable of showing four different basketball games at once. When it comes to track, 3/4 of NBC coverage are ads and talking heads. Cripes.
George Matthews was throwing a 28 lb weight vs. the College/University/Open 35 lb weight. That is one problem with trying to track masters throw marks at College/University/Open meets when there is no indication of the implement weight. At least a 60m is always a 60m.

    Thx for the kind words.
It is always a treat to run on the UW Indoor track, fortunate to workout there once a week during the sometimes brutal winters up here too. Metcalf (UW Coach) has been great about letting me run against the collegiates over the years.
Indoor is not something that I run with any emphasis on, but I still enjoy not having to buck the wind when I am inside.
I am sure the 1500 next month at Boston will be a good one (200m legit track) and some fast times will be run by all.
I am actually at peace with all of my “non-legal” times. Just call me Footnote Tony!
    Cheers
