Track-laden GeezerJock magazine has senior moment

In the new edition of GeezerJock magazine, publisher Brian Reilly writes that the Prostate Cancer Foundation’s Athletes for a Cure program “will partner with several Masters organizations, including USA Track & Field.” That was news to me — and USATF press honcho Jill Geer. I suspected that he meant to say “USA Triathlon.” So I gave ol’ Brian a heads up, and he replied yesterday: “You are correct.” He said he would shoot an apology to Jill and others, “and let them know we’ll be running a correction.” No sweat. The overall magazine is a T&F thriller this month, with pieces on Sumi Onodera-Leonard (comeback from near-fatal crash) and a photo spread on some masters track stars. It’s a keeper — even with the flub.

I was intrigued by a letter to the editor— responding to my Neil Griffin article in a previous GeezerJock. The reader, Terrence Stein of Chicago, wrote:

No testosterone, ever
Your recent article about Neil Griffin (“Suspended!” GeezerJock, December 2006) was both disappointing and misguided. The article acknowledges that Griffin relied upon testosterone injections to significantly raise his body’s level of testosterone. The article decries the “one-size-fits-all absurdity” of rules that ban such testosterone injections, even when the injections are medically prescribed. The absurdity lies not in such rules, but rather in the implication that a select group of athletes (namely, athletes who can obtain medically-prescribed steroids) should be allowed to enjoy the enormous benefit of steroids while such benefit is denied to all other athletes against whom they compete.

My only response to this is: Whatever.
Let’s just banish the sickies from masters track. They get an advantage.

Yes, nice magazine. I do enjoy reading it.
But PLEASE lose the name. I hate being even remotely associated with the word Geezer. Yuck.

    Ken,
thanks for your response to the letters to the editor on Neil Griffin.
That particular letter disturbed me particularly after the excellent coverage you gave this topic earlier. Keep up the good work!
