USA teams dominate relays on final day; another Oliveira WR

Francisco Oliveira of Brazil added a second world record Sunday at Porto Alegre, the final day of worlds where Team USA dominated the relays as usual. Francisco clocked an amazing 6:37.75 for 1500 meters, beating the listed M85 WR of 6:51.32 by Japan’s Yoshimitsu Miyauchi in 2009. (Earlier he notched an 800 WR.) On the Age-Graded Tables, 6:37 is worth an open (age 20-30) time of 3:23.8. (The real WR is 3:26.) American quartets, meanwhile, won eight 4x100s and four 4x400s — far outdistancing British teams for golds. (The UK teams won a total of six.) The Yanks might have won more but were DQ’d in the M60 and M70 4×1. Other world records set Sunday were in the weight pentathlon — by M65 Arild Busterud of Norway, whose 5255 points shattered the listed WR of 5044 by American Paul Economides in 2010, and by W75 Evaun Williams of Britain, whose 5719 beat the listed WR of 4924 by Germany’s Susanne Wissinger in 2010. But Arild and Evaun are no strangers to the record books. Arild holds the M55 and M60 WR in the throws pent, and Evaun holds the W65 and W70 WRs in the same event. Talk about greedy.

Americans on W50 world champion 4×4 team show their medals Sunday.

would have been nice if the results included the competitor names as done in prior WMA’s; the team makeup is not always clear due to injuries or those that move down to run with younger age groups.

  2. Jeff Davison - October 28, 2013

    Congrads to the relay winners,

  3. Ron Johnson - October 28, 2013

Ditto on Warren’s comments. I assume that after Charles Allie’s individual 56.60 (finally got it right)he and Bob Lida picked up their 5th gold medal as members of the 4×400. Hopefully, erstwhile world champions and always gentlemen, Roger Pierce and Sam Hall were part of the relays.

  4. Peter Taylor - October 28, 2013

Following up on the comments of Warren Graff and Ron Johnson, for the life of me I can’t identify the two middle women shown above on the victorious US W50 4 x 400 team.

That’s Sarah Lawson of Massachusetts in the white shirt on the left, and Kathleen Shook of Indiana is on the right, but who are the two others? Anyone know?

  5. Lucho - October 28, 2013

In the photo, next to Sarah, is Karen Maxwell from Salem, OR. She finished 4th in the 100 hurdles.

  6. Liz Palmer - October 28, 2013

The lady next to the very speedy Sarah Lawson is Karen Maxwell. K.Max was a member of our W50 shuttle hurdle relay team that set an AR in Lisle in 2012.

  7. Peter Taylor - October 28, 2013

Thank you, Lucho and Liz. Yes, I believe I announced Karen Maxwell in one meet (can’t remember which one), and she does look vaguely familiar.* The competitor to Karen’s left remains to be identified.

    * Wait a second. I just reread your comment, Liz; I announced Karen in Lisle. Thanks again.

  8. Jerry Bookin-Weiner - October 29, 2013

Isn’t the other one Joy Upshaw?

  9. Peter Taylor - October 29, 2013

Jerry, I blew up the photo but could not find Joy. In addition, I’ve announced Joy since 1996 and don’t recall seeing her run a 400. My final guess, based on the final time, the athletes who were at Porto Alegre, and some other clues is that the athlete in question is Karen Frazier. Just a speculation.

  10. Gary Snyder - October 29, 2013

    M70 4×100 ran first and was DQ’d

    Gary Snyder

  11. Sarah Lawson - October 29, 2013

Yes,from the left it is me, Karen Maxwell, Karen Frazier, and Kathleen Shook. And Joy’s not there (although someone from the stands yelled “go Joy!” as I ran down home-straight :-). She flew out two days earlier. Thanks for posting the great photo, Ken!

  12. Peter Taylor - October 29, 2013

Good that someone was yelling for you, Sarah, even though the person thought you were Joy. Oh, well, you went gold, and that is the big thing.

  13. Christel Donley - October 30, 2013

We made it home, after a 2 day travel, the Colorado altitude and my persistent cold will slow me down.

Little story about the women 75 plu 4×100 m relay. There were only 2, Brazil and the USA.
Yes, we came in 2nd, and NO, we did not exist in the results. There was a team W 75 -79 “Costa Rica”, in a 2nd heat, that did not exist either, since there was no CR team! and no 2nd heat!
. It took us and finally Mary Rosado over 3 hrs!!! to get it straight.
Some things just take a little longer!
Our combined ages: 320 – not bad!

  14. steepledude - October 30, 2013

Peter, I certainly join most of the others here wishing you success in finding Joy.
