W70 Marie-Louise Michelsohn cracks barrier for 10K WR
Blaine Lawson graciously reports: “Marie-Louise Michelsohn has just shattered the world outdoor record for the 10K (W70) by 31 seconds. On a cold and foggy morning at the College of San Mateo, Michelsohn maintained a relentless pace to finish with a 46:38.50 in the USATF Pacific Association Outdoor Masters and Open Championships. The former world record was 47:09.94 set by Ritta Rasimus on July 31, 2011. (The former American record of 48:11.29, set in on June 22nd, 2003, belonged to June Machala.) Needless to say, she is elated and exhausted. It represents a huge shift in gears from her last record attempt, the indoor 400m where she set the American record at 80.16 (at the Armory back in March).” Results are now posted here. Average mile pace: 7:30.4. Incredible.

It’s always good to be willing to travel; I believe that Marie-Louise still resides in the great state of New York. Flying to California to set a world mark is just the thing to spice up a Memorial Day weekend, and look at the result. Amazing.
Apparently the conditions were excellent for a 10,000, as San Mateo had a low of 50 and a high of 64 on Sunday, the presumed day of the race. Compare that to the predicted high for New York City today, Memorial Day: 88 degrees. Just brutal for a long race.
How impressive it is for Marie-Louise to have that range in ability from 400 metres to 10 K! Marie-Louise and Diane Palmason from Canada are the female trend-setters in that regard, I believe. Diane has or has had records from 200 metres to marathon.
Awesome, Marie-Louise!
Conditions were excellent early Sunday morning for Marie-Louise’s fabulous race. It was cloudy, in the low 50’s, and no wind. The wind picked up in mid-morning so it was breezy and cold for our hurdle races, but the sun broke the cloud cover in the afternoon and it was very pleasant! A very fun meet; thanks to all of the PA organizers for making it happen!
What a feat! The 10k and the 400. Amazing.
Congratulations on your World Record!!!
