Willie Gault gobstomps M55 world records in 100, 200 at Oxy Invite

Masters sprint legend Willie Gault had a bad April. A federal judge ordered him to pay a $78,000 civil fine and “give up $101,000 in ill-gotten gains plus $27,571 in interest,” according to a Reuters account of an SEC case. His May is turning out a lot better. Eight months after turning 55, Willie ran the 100 and 200 Saturday at the Occidental Invitational in Los Angeles. Bill Collins, say goodbye to two of your M55 world records. Running with 0.0 wind in the 100, Willie clocked an incredible 11.30 to crush Bill’s listed WR of 11.44 at Penn in 2008. In the 200, unattached Willie had a legal wind of 1.0 when he ran 23.24. Bill’s listed WR of 23.36 came at sizzling Charlotte nationals in 2006. On the Age-Graded Tables, Willie’s marks are worth 9.84 and 20.06. Methinks he’s far better than that. Way to go, Willie! Also at Oxy: Sylvia Mosqueda, who turned 50 in April, beat the listed W50 American record in the 1500 with her 4:50.12. The listed AR is 4:51.86 by Marisa Sutera Strange in 2015. The listed WR is 4:36.79 by Clare Elms of Britain,

Willie won the M50 100 at 2011 Sacramento worlds in 10.96. He's not much slower now.

Here’s all I know about Willie’s court case:

(Reuters) — Willie Gault, the former National Football League wide receiver and Olympic sprinter [wrong; he never ran in the Games], was ordered to pay $206,571 to settle a U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission lawsuit over his role in a scheme to inflate the stock price of a heart-monitoring device maker.

U.S. District Judge James Selna of the Santa Ana, California federal court ordered Gault, who was co-chief executive officer of Heart Tronics Inc, to pay a $78,000 civil fine and give up $101,000 in ill-gotten gains plus $27,571 in interest.

The judge also banned Gault from serving as an officer or director of public companies, in a final judgment issued on Thursday.

Gault had argued that no sanctions, or at most a minimal fine, were warranted.

A federal jury in March 2015 cleared Gault of intentionally committing fraud, but found him liable on less serious charges, including filing false certifications with the SEC and circumventing Heart Tronics’ internal controls.

George Newhouse, a partner at the Dentons law firm representing Gault, said his client will appeal.

The SEC had sued Gault and others affiliated with Heart Tronics in December 2011.

Among the defendants was Mitchell Stein, a lawyer who the SEC said controlled much of Heart Tronics’ business, hired promoters to tout its stock online, and installed Gault as co-CEO to drum up publicity.

Stein was convicted in 2013 of fraud in a related criminal case, and is serving a 17-year prison term.

“We think the judge imposed remedies far exceeding what is provided under the law,” Newhouse said in a phone interview, referring to the final judgment against Gault.

“Since the jury clearly, and unequivocally, rejected any fraud by our client, it is wholly inappropriate to require disgorgement,” he added. “No proceeds from any fraud went into Mr. Gault’s pocket, and he was a victim of fraud by Mr. Stein.”

Andrew Ceresney, head of the SEC enforcement division, in a statement said Selna’s order reflects the seriousness of Gault’s actions, and “reinforces the importance of CEOs understanding their obligations under the federal securities laws.”

Gault played 11 seasons in the NFL with the Chicago Bears and Los Angeles Raiders, winning Super Bowl XX with the Bears in 1986. He was also on the U.S. Olympic team that boycotted the 1980 Summer Games in Moscow.

The case is SEC v Gault, U.S. District Court, Central District of California, No. 11-01962.

Re your aside “…Olympic sprinter [wrong; he never ran in the Games]…”:

Gault made the 1980 Olympic team (which the US boycotted). In my mind, you make the Olympic team, you’re an Olympian (Wikipedia thinks so, too).

  5. Michael Walker - May 8, 2016

I agree with Curt. If Gault made the 1980 team and was prepared to run if the was no boycott, I think that he can be considered an Olympian.

  6. Ken Stone - May 8, 2016

Best reference to “who is an Olympian”:

If you’re not listed, you’re not an Olympian. Period.

  7. Jeff Davison - May 8, 2016

Willie also competed in the winter Olympics for the USA bobsled team.

Willie holder of many records. .. Congrads again.

  8. bob - May 8, 2016

    amazing performance by Willie.
However if you don’t actually compete in the Olympics you are not an Olympian. That was the consequence of mixing politics and sport in 1980. Athletes with a small window for success saw the window slammed shut thanks to Jimmy Carter.

  9. bob - May 8, 2016

Oh and he didn’t compete at the Olympics in the bobsled he was an alternate. Herschel Walker was on the team and actually competed later.

If you make your country’s Olympic team and then your stupid country decides not to sent a team, as far as I’m concerned you are an Olympian.

On Saturday, Willie ran 11.36 legal at Oxy:
    http://royalresults.com/liveresults/170506F010.htm

    He’s now 56, but his M55 record is 11.30.

    Not bad.

  16. Peter L. Taylor - May 7, 2017

Ken, it gets a little confusing, so perhaps a restatement of what happened with the M55 100 record would be helpful. A year ago today, Willie ran 11.30 in the 100, and that remains the M55 American record. However, apparently someone decided not to accept it as a world record, and thus Bill Collins retained (and retains even today) the WR for M55 at 11.44.

Now we see that Willie ran 11.36 legal yesterday at Occidental. One would think that that would become the M55 WR, but, as noted above, Willie already ran 11.30 a year ago.

I can’t afford to get involved in these things any more, but it would be a nice idea to revive Willie’s 11.30 from 2016 and try to get it accepted as a WR. After all, it’s long been listed as the AR for M55.
