Neni Lewis hammers W50 world record in the ball-and-chain
According to these results from the USATF Mid-Atlantic Masters Championships in Chester, Pennsylvania, Oneithea “Neni” Lewis spun the hammer 53.14 meters (174-4) and shattered the listed W50 world record of 51.73 (169-8) by Australia’s Marja Leena Parviainen in 1998. (It also beats the 52.24/171-5 by Anne Bellanger of France, noted on mastersathletics.net.) The old American record was 48.18 (158-1) by Vanessa Hilliard in 1996. A 5-foot improvement in the WR is no surprise, since Neni also holds the W40 and W45 WRs. But now she’s throwing the 3-kilo implement instead of the 4-kilo. Neni, a lock for the USATF Masters Hall of Fame, turned 50 on June 11, the first day of the two-day meet, so this likely was her first record in the new age group. Look for many more to come! Great throw, Neni!

Congratulations to not only a fine athlete but a wonderful person. My best 16lb throw came at Long and Strong in PA last summer. I threw with Nini who could not have been more helpful. And as I jumped around for joy with my 10.70m personal best here was this talented women joining in my accomplishment. Its what I love about Masters!

Ken’s headline repeats an oft-used but technically incorrect reference to hammer throw equipment— it is a WIRE, a thin piece of steel, it is NOT a CHAIN.
While I am on the subject of mis-used terminology, did you know the proper correct name is Grand Central TERMINAL in New York City…Grand Central “station” is the name correctly associated with the 4-5-6 line Subway stop in that building, since a “station” is where trains come into and go out of, but a TERMINAL is the “end of the line”- trains begin there or end there, but you can’t stay on-board and go somewhere else along your journey.
Keep going for more, Neni!

Congratulations to Oneithea Lewis!
I am a team-mate (LC Luzern, Switzerland) of Mägy Duss, W50, who won the hammer in Kamloops with 48.06. Now Mägy is injured but I think when I say to her that Oneithea Lewis throws 53.14…so maybe…stay tuned 😉
