Nolan Shaheed, 2 others scratch from IAAF Portland 800 races

Nolan will be missed at world meet.

Nolan will be missed at world meet.

SoCal Track Club’s Nolan Shaheed, whose 800 seed time of 2:17.5 for IAAF Portland sparked questions, won’t run at worlds after all. Neither will France’s Marc Schmitt or Spain’s Aurora Perez in the W55 women’s race. According to start lists for Saturday’s events at the Oregon Convention Center, Nolan has been replaced in the M60 men’s race by Ukraine’s Oleksandr Lysenko (2:18.44), and Britain’s David Wilcox (2:18.67) will take the place of Marc. Had she not been injured at USATF masters nationals, Australia’s Marie Kay would have moved up into Aurora’s spot, but fellow Aussie Deborah Drennan will run instead. I haven’t heard why Nolan and the others fell out of the deck, but it’s possible Nolan felt he wasn’t in 2:17 shape after running 2:31 at ABQ nationals.

    Well, there’s always Perth.

The elevation (5200 ft) problems at Alb was for real. At least one M70 competitor checked into a N.Mex. emergency room, thought he might be having a heart attack (turns out, just the elevation). I hear pro runners sleep in bedrooms simulating the atmosphere at 10,000 ft. Personally, I got to Alb several days early, took several hikes to 7000 ft, felt good doing the pent 1000m. Recommend early arrival for the 2017 redo.

Nolan has been hurt most of indoors from what I understand. They asked Horace Grant at last minute but he could not make it.

With the races over and Lesley Chaplin having taken a close second in the women’s event, I hope that we can get interviews of Lesley, Julie Hayden, and Cheryl Bellaire.

I would be interested in knowing how they were treated, how the spectators responded, the experience of running 4 laps on the world’s stage, their satisfactions and disappointments, etc.

Genuinely interested to know if there is a source of video for both races? The BBC and Eurosport tv coverage stubbornly stayed with the heptathlon pole vault competition while the races were very clearly happening on the track. In Britain/Europe at least, the media has again let Masters down.

WMA promoted these as “exhibition” events. That fails rather badly if they don’t get “exhibited” other than to a part-full stadium.

I chatted with men’s leaders and the American women afterward. Tons of photos from perfect spot. Will post story late tonight.

Well done, Ken. I didn’t realise you were there!

See http://www.usatf.org for interviews with Lesley, Julie, and Cheryl (summaries, not videos).

I was there watching and I thought that the fans were great, especially once they found out age of the runners. I think that the fans appreciated the strong finish of the races.
