Pete Taylor confirmed as Boston indoor announcer

Contrary to rumors, Pete Taylor will indeed be a meet announcer at the USATF Masters Indoor Championships in Boston in late March. His selection became official this week after a meeting of event organizers. But for reasons not yet made public, Pete will announce only Saturday and Sunday events, he reports. Not Friday. It’s not known who the Friday announcer will be. (Jan. 10 update: Boston informs me that Bob Gamere, a local announcer, former sportscaster, will handle Friday events.). Pete indicates he was a little worried, though, since his role at Boston wasn’t confirmed until this morning. Pete will warm up for Boston by announcing the Hartshorne masters miles January 20 in Ithaca, New York, which will include appearances by recent mile record-setter Alisa Harvey of Virginia and perpetual mile-record threat Tony Young of Washington state. (Jan. 10 update: Tony isn’t coming, due to work obligations at his new employer.)

Tony Young posted this note on a thread at letsrun.com:
Good to hear from you and John again. Best of luck with your new career move. Unfortunatly, that is why I will not be able to head over to Ithaca this year for the Hartshorne Mile. I am two months into my new job (different bank) and they frown on leaving on extended get-aways until I have proven myself again. I will have to race locally for awhile. Trying to let Tom H know, so if you see him, tell him sorry for me.
Hopefully, hit the Indoor track a couple of times this season for an 800-3k effort, if not then I turn 45 in April and it would be nice to ready to go then.
Best of luck,
tyoung
Me again: I Googled Bob Gamere and found this:
“Folks of a certain age . . . may remember “Candlepins for Cash” — a pretty entertaining bowling game show first hosted by sportscaster and former New York Yankee announcer Bob Gamere and then former Red Sox star Rico Petrocelli — that ran on Channel 7 from 1975-1982 and then on Channel 25 from 1982-1983.”
Also this from 2001:
“Nice article in the Brockton Enterprise earlier this week about Bob Gamere, onetime Boston sports anchor (and Candlepins for Cash host, and Yankees play-by-play announcer), who’s now calling horse races at the Brockton Fair.”
So it looks as if we have a veteran announcer for our masters meet.

Hmmmm. am thinking that TY is not slated for Hartshorne as per your blog posting…I believe that he has indicated elsewhere that as he is deeply involved in a new employment commitment that he’s basically not in a position to travel in the short term…btw, TY moves into a new age group in April (45-49)…lets all wish him the very best in both his new professional endeavors AND impending age goup shift because Tony Young is one of the master’s best “good guys”…a class act indeed!

John Hinton also turns 40 possibly before Hartshorne they should try to get him to headline the Men’s race. Tony is great but John has always had a close rivilry with Tony and has the 1500m 40-44 American record.
