Sims, Leek run wild at Western States in Sacramento
M70 sprinter Gary Sims and and W75 multi-eventer Edythe Leek were among the stars of the Western States Masters International Invitational over the weekend in Sacramento. Gary ran the 100 in 13.98, the deuce in 29.22 and the 4 in 64.99. Co-meet director Mary Woo also reports: “Liz Palmer (had) huge PRs in the 80 hurdles (ran solo) and the shot. Amanda Scotti (is) a “newbie” to keep on your radar for sure, along with Kathleen Poe. Jeff Mann returning to the 800 after a few years absent from that event, and throwers galore! Had an amazing bunch of PAUSATF officials and volunteers. . . . Randy Sturgeon (was a) superb announcer! Plan to make this event a mainstay on the schedule in years to come.”

Liz Palmer rocks. Can’t wait to see her go against Cynthia Overson and Caryl Senn-Griffiths in the 80h at Spokane. In the 100 she’ll go against Kim Ross, Daphne Sluys, Barbi Raban, and Paula Fortuna. Now what we need is some other competitors to fill the open lanes (I assume the track has 8 lanes). Regular deadline is this Thursday at 11:59 pm or so.
Mary and her crew did a great job. It was a well-run meet with good organization and officials. For a first time event, I thought participation was pretty good. Hopefully it will grow next year. Really enjoyed the camaraderie – nearly forgot what masters meets are like.
Two things I learned: 1)It’s a lot harder to double at 45 than it was at 40, especially with only an hour rest; 2) Spend more time breaking in a new pair of spikes. I woke up yesterday with the worst blister I’ve ever had. Couldn’t even put on a pair of shoes to go to work.
Liz Palmer does rock! I was hoping to get my butt kicked by her in the sprints and would love to fill a lane. An injured foot killed that idea. I will be in Spokane to throw some stuff and get my butt kicked by Oneithea Lewis, so there is still that to look forward to. I can’t wait!
The point of this is..there must be hold outs who will be signing up at the very last hour, or for me, when I get back from the track later tonight. Thanks for all the updates Mr. Taylor!
Thank you, Leigh. Of course, as the announcer I have a particular interest in this meet and thus I am following it closely. At 6 p.m. EDT/3:00 p.m. Pacific time Wednesday we had an estimated 734 entries. I just counted 1688 events entered and divided the number by 2.3 to get my estimate of 734. As noted elsewhere, this is a good number based on history but may be slightly conservative. If the average person entered only 2.2 events my estimate would be 767.
We have 33 hours until the regular deadline and need (if my lower estimate is correct) an additional 266 entrants to reach 1000. We then need 40 people to pay the $50 penalty for late entry, 20 from outside the US (not listed on the Web), and 40 mailed entries that have not been counted yet. That would bring us to an acceptable 1100. But 266 entrants in just 33 hours sounds very challenging indeed.
In some ways a smaller turnout will make it easier for me, as I have about 60% of the brainpower and 40% of the stamina I had when I first announced a nationals (Greensboro, NC, for the 1996 indoors), but I am hoping for bigger numbers, if only to give our entrants more competition.
If I don’t do well (i.e., announce well) in this meet I will announce no more outdoors (am committed to the 2009 indoor masters in Landover, MD). So ….this will be a test for me, which is part of the reason I am following the meet so closely.
Thanks for the post, Ken! Just a few more tidbits: Ken Wun nabbed gold in the 100, 200, and 400, Mike Curry had a nation-leading heave in the weight throw, Larry Barnum ran a very fine 400 and Randy Wilson dominated the throws with 3 golds and a silver.
We had 130 athletes at our first-time meet put on by first time meet directors. I think that’s pretty darned good! Of course, there is always room for improvement, so next year there will be more marketing and promotion, hopefully a sponsor or two, a streamlined schedule, and a goal of 300 entries! FYI, after the City of Sacramento cancelled the 2008 Senior Games, we were approached by a colleague who asked if we’d be willing to roll the T&F portion of the Senior Games into the Western States. We said “sure” and it was a great decision- lots of folks came our way via the Senior Games connection. I hope we’ll be able to host the “meet within a meet” again next year. Regardless, the 2nd Annual WS Invite will take place in Sac next year!

Speaking of great performances, Roger Parnell got a national age-group leading LJ. This was especially good to see as Roger broke his foot in the middle of the short hurdle race in Charlotte, 2006. I know he was concerned about healing up but obviously he’s done just fine. Roger jumps in M55 but I think his actual age is 59. He will be a terror in the M60 group when he moves up.
