Dick Richards adds M80 mark to his set of U.S. long jump records

Coming back from a hammie pull earlier this season, M80 Dick Richards long jumped 4.22 (13-10 1/2) Sunday at the San Diego Senior Olympics to beat the listed American record of 4.19 (13-9) by Mel Larsen 10 years ago at Decatur nationals. It’s his third AR. (He holds M65 and M75, too.) Prepping for 2015 […]

Dick Richards makes impressive comeback at 71

Sprint start maven Dick Richards of Encinitas, California, was nearly unbeatable in the late 1990s — both in the short sprints and the long jump. He dominated the 1999 Gateshead world masters meet and set several world age-group records along the way. Then about 2001 he disappeared from the track. Now he’s back — tanned, […]

Starting tips by Dick Richards, developer of the Vers-A-Block

Dick Richards of California, the gold medal winner in the M65 100 and 200 at the 1999 World Veterans Athletic Championships in Gateshead, England, and inventor of the new Vers-A-Bloc, offers the following advice: Having just returned from an excellent sprinting forum conducted by Olympic Training Center coach Dixon Farmer and with all due respect […]

How did San Diegans fare at Lyon? Better than USA in Beijing

It’s an unfair comparison, but I note in a Times of San Diego story that the six San Diegans competing in Lyon brought home more gold medals than all of the U.S. kiddies in Beijing. Special thanks to Chip Crowl, Pat Kelly, Dick Richards and Jim Chinn for sharing some anecdotes. It’s also worth noting […]

Americans win 5 golds (and 10 medals) in 100 finals at Lyon

Rob Jerome shot me some quick 100-meter results from Lyon, and amid Friday’s frying heat (124 on the track) were sizzling times. Gold medalists included these Yanks: M45 Reggie Pendland (11.24 into a 2.1 mps wind), W45 Emmanuelle McGowan (12.85 into a 1.9 wind), M55 Allan Tissenbaum (12.05), W75 Kathy Bergen (16.31 into a 3.1 […]

Willie Gault highlights day of speed at Sacto world championships

When a 50-year-old man runs the fastest 100-meter dash at the world masters meet — faster than M35, M40 and M45 — you know you’ve seen something historic. So it was as Willie Gault won the M50 title with a 10.96 into a 0.5 wind Saturday at Sacramento State. Willie’s first world masters gold was […]

Kathy Bergen, Christel Donley claim American records at Pasadena

Kathy Bergen — despite an injured hammie — cleared 1.25 meters (4-1 1/4) today in the high jump at the California Senior Games at Caltech. That beat the listed W70 American record of 1.22 (4-0) by Leonore McDaniels in 1998. (The listed world record is 1.27 (4-2) by Christiane Schmalbruch in 2007.) Kathy already has […]

Wind robs Kathy Bergen of W70 world record for 100 meters

Dang wind! If the breezes weren’t so stiff Sunday at the John Ward Masters Games, Kathy Bergen would have smashed the listed W70 world age-group record for 100 meters. According to results from the Santa Ana College meet south of Los Angeles, Kathy clocked 14.60 for 100, but with a 2.2 meters per second tailwind. […]

Bruno Kimmel’s 100 WR for M75 almost defies imagination

On July 11, 2009, I was shooting sprinters at Oshkosh nationals, especially admiring my fellow Jayhawk, M70 Bob Lida. He outlegged Robert Whilden 13.58 to 13.68 in a wind-aided 100-meter final. Hard to fathom such speed at that age. I’d be a half-second behind! But what words describe what happened across the Atlantic the same […]
