Kathy Bergen, W65 sprinter, is first profile in a series

Kathy Bergen wasn’t at Boston. But her legacy in the indoor sprints and high jump looms large. My wife, Chris, interviewed her last season, and the resulting profile is now posted here. Chris hopes to profile other masters athletes for my Web site (and illustrate them with photos). Chris, BTW, is a former reporter for the Tucson Citizen, Chula Vista Star-News, The Vista Press, San Marcos (Calif.) Courier and Oceanside Blade-Citizen. She also was chief photographer for a weekly newspaper group based in north San Diego County. So she knows what she’s doing. I look forward to posting more of her work!

Great story on Kathy – Well done to Chris – and to Ken for some of the photos.
I well remember watching Kathy win the 60 meters at the indoor meet in Reno in 1995. She just squeaked over the line in front of Carolyn Cappetta – the leading W55 sprinter at the time. The next day – in my first indoor track meet since 1986 – I beat Carolyn in the 400, a surprise to me as well as to her.
The next day the three of us lined up for the 200 – and the finish became a shot that was featured in several masters publications – a blanket finish – almost. But Carolyn was the winner – so a fitting split, with one win for each of us. A fun meet! I look forward to seeing Kathy at meets in 2008. Meanwhile best of luck to her.
