Tony Young’s quadfecta: 400, 800, mile, mile at Wash. all-comers

Tony Young

Becca Gillespy Peter shares results from the third all-comers meet this summer at Shoreline, Washington, where conditions were “cool, breezy, heavy rain shower mid-meet.” Notable among the masters highlights was the workout by M45 world record holder Tony Young, 48, of Club Northwest, the meet sponsor. Tony ran a hand-timed mile in 4:32.6 , and entered the predict-a-mile race, where he guessed a 6:45 and ran a 6:09. Continuing his speed play, Tony ran the 400 in 59.9 and the 800 in 2:18.7. Unsure of the order of events, but quite a collection of times!

Club Northwest has been putting on summer all-comers meets in the Seattle, WA area for nearly a half-century. This year is the 42nd annual series of track and field meets held Wednesday evenings between late May and early August at the Shoreline (WA) District Stadium.

The meets are open to all ages, with a kids meet that runs from 6-7 pm or so. For $5, adults can enter as many events as they want. Open/masters tracksters run in heats assigned by your seed times. August 4 is the “imperial” meet with all distances in yards, including the 180 yd low hurdles!

Bill Roe, former President of USATF, drives nearly a hundred miles one way to run the meet with a group of dedicated volunteers.
